The three words that come into our minds when we hear damaged hair are  "dry, brittle strands." This hair concern is often caused by heat (frequent use of hot tools, prolonged exposure to the sun) and chemical damage (dye jobs and perms). The ugly truth is once the tresses have gone through so much beating, there is no way you can bring them back to their 100 percent healthy state. The good news, however, there are products and treatments that can help soften and boost the shine of your locks.

Ahead, everything you need to resurrect damaged hair:

How to prevent damaged hair: Important reminders

Lifestyle habits affect your hair's health. Here are some things you should keep in mind to prevent dryness and hair fall.

  1. Avoid too much heat-styling.

Hot tools can turn the strands brittle and fried! As much as possible, give your locks time to breathe, or spritz heat protectant spray before styling.

  2. Take hair color and perm breaks.

We understand that getting a fresh new dye job or a perm retouch makes us look and feel good, but constant chemical treatments may damage the tresses. Space out your salon appointments to give your strands a break.

  3. Condition your locks every day.

Make it a daily habit to nourish your tresses with conditioning products that are loaded with the best emollient ingredients. You can take it up a notch by soaking your strands in a hair mask once a week.

  4. Be mindful of the hair accessories you use.

Some hair ties and clips tend to tug the strands, leading to breakage. Go for accessories that are not made of steel—velvet and silk scrunchies and no-crease hair ties are your best bets.

  5. Go easy on your ponytail.

A snatched ponytail sure is pretty, but this hairstyle places stress on the roots and strands. Constant pulling and tugging may lead to breakage.

  6. Don't tug the tangles.

You might want to quickly comb out the tangles, but it's better to go slow. You might break the strands while untying the knots! Here's the proper way to do it.

  7. Treat your wet strands with extra care.

Hair breaks easily when it's wet. Switch your towel with an old t-shirt or a microfiber headwrap to prevent the terry cloth fibers from snagging the strands. Slowly smoothen out the buhol with a wide-toothed comb to avoid hair fall.

  8. Sleep on a silk pillowcase.

The silk fabric won't tug on your locks while you toss and turn in bed!

  9. Manage stressful emotions.

Yep, stress can affect the health of your hair! As much as you can, keep calm and pacify your thoughts. Of course, it's still important to feel your emotions but analyze first if a certain circumstance is worth stressing about. If you can't change it, just let it go. Choose your battles. Don't forget to schedule me-time, too. BTW, self-care is not all about massages and skincare—check out this story that tells the *best* way to care for yourself.
