Achieve gorgeous peepers 24/7!

False lashes are nice, but let's be real: It's nakakatamad to apply them every day. Good thing lash extensions serve as a semi-permanent solution!  You'll get gorgeous peepers 24/7!

If you're thinking of trying them out, below is everything you need to know. We tell you how long the procedure takes + the maintenance, including the different lash salons that can cater to every budget.

What is it?

Lash extensions are similar to falsies. Except in their case, the ~*fine*~ pieces of silk, mink, or synthetic hairs are attached to your natural lashes, creating an I-was-born-this-way effect. [Via Into The Gloss] Through lash extensions, you can wake up already looking glam—you can do away without eye makeup. It's the ultimate must-have for beauty addicts who want to cut their routines in half!

How long is the procedure?

Depending on the type of extensions you ask for, it can last up to two hours. Your lash technician has to clean your eye area and prep your lashes to make sure there aren't any leftover mascara or eyeliner in them. Then, she meticulously attaches each piece of hair to your lash line.

What are the possible side effects?

Just like any beauty treatment, lash extensions have their fair share of possible mishaps. According to Self, the two most common side effects are allergic reactions and hair loss. The former can occur if you're allergic to the glue or adhesive used; symptoms include swelling, redness, and irritation around the eye area.

The latter consequence is most likely to happen if you constantly tug or pull on your lash extensions. When you do this, your natural lashes can come off, too, damaging the hair follicles and preventing new hair from growing. Yikes!

The key to extending the lifespan of your extensions is by properly taking care of them. Here are our top tips:

Before getting extensions

  • Show up with a bare face.
Save yourself the hassle of putting on a full face of makeup, only to have it removed an hour later. Lash extension application requires a clean eye area, so they'll have to remove all the foundation, eyeshadow, and concealer you have on.
  • Research the salon you're going to.
Lash extensions are a popular treatment to get, so many places claim to have world-class tools or use the latest formulas. If the salon's offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Read up on other people's experiences if you're unsure of the salon. ;)
  • Always ask for a patch test.
No, this is not a ridiculous request to ask. If the technician doesn't want to give you a patch test of the products they'll be using on your lashes, girl, bye! It's always better to be safe than sorry (Read: Allergic reactions to adhesives).

After getting extensions

  • Avoid getting them wet for 24 hours.
If you want your lashes to stay in perfect shape for the next few weeks, avoid getting them in contact with sweat, water, and oil for 12 to 24 hours to allow the glue to properly set.
  • Avoid using oily products.
This means you can't use eye creams, facial oils, and oil-based makeup removers for a while! Steer clear of waterproof mascara, as well, because you'll need an oil-based cleanser to remove it. [Via Glamour]
  • Don't rub or tug them.
Not only can this cause the extensions to separate from your lashes, but the stray hairs can land in your eye. Ouch!
  • Use a spoolie to separate them.
For a full, fluttery effect, always have a clean spoolie on-hand to comb through your lashes whenever they get tangled in each other.
  • Sleep on your back.
When you sleep on the side of your face, your lashes can sway to the side. Meaning, when you wake up, your extensions are all wonky. No thanks!
