Aside from sweeping confessions of love and epic plot twists, there's one scene every K-drama fan looks forward to: The kiss. Don't you just love how they catch you off guard? Or hate it when they're used as an episode cliffhanger? Here, we run down the most common types of kisses in Korean dramas and some of the best lip-locking onscreen pairs in recent rom-com history.
1. The Almost Kiss
If you were able to watch Heirs, you might remember this short but sweet scene with presko guy Kim Tan (Lee Min Ho) and innocent-looking Cha Eun Sang (Park Shin Hye). Eun Sang was eating a donut-on-a-stick dessert, and Kim Tan playfully bit the other end—almost stealing a kiss from her!
Here's another variation brought to us by Her Private Life. Spoilers ahead for anyone still waiting for the ongoing series to be over before watching it. Ryan Gold (Kim Jae Wook) and Sung Deok Mi (Park Min Young) were faking their relationship at the start of the drama. To make it convincing to a stalker sasaeng, Ryan fake-kisses Deok Mi. And although he kissed his thumb and not her lips, the heart-fluttering effect is still so real!
2. The Ppo Ppo
This might be every K-drama fan's favorite type of kiss. The ppo ppo is that quick but super sweet peck on the lips (or the cheek).
It can be a stolen kiss that cuts off the girl mid-sentence, just like in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo when Jung Joon Hyung (Nam Joo Hyuk) couldn't resist the cuteness of his girlfriend, Bok Joo (Lee Sung Kyung).
Here's another ppo ppo session courtesy of Dong Man when he was trying to calm the feisty Ae Ra down.
An aww-inducing ppo ppo can also be given in bed, like at the end of a long day when you just want to show a little appreciation for the love of your life. Remember how Heo Joon Jae (Lee Min Ho) gave Shim Chung (Jun Ji Hyun) several small kisses in Legend Of The Blue Sea?
Of course, ladies can knock men off their feet with a ppo ppo, too! Take your cue from Bae Suzy, playing Nam Hong Joo, in While You Were Sleeping. She sure left Jung Jae Chan (Lee Jong Suk)—and herself—speechless with her sudden bold move.
3. The Cool Guy Kiss
It's the type of kiss that totally catches the female lead character off guard and keeps her frozen in place at first. The "cool guy" kisses her suddenly and very slowly as if he's testing the waters. If the girl doesn't resist, it progresses to a more passionate kiss. Of course, what makes the guy "cool" here is not how he imposes what he wants on the girl, but how he only does this kiss after making sure his lover wants the affectionate gesture, too.
Exhibit A: Heirs' Kim Tan (Lee Min Ho) and Cha Eun Sang (Park Shin Hye) after Tan's promise to protect Eun Sang at all costs.
Exhibit B: Her Private Life's Ryan Gold (Kim Jae Wook) and Sung Deok Mi (Park Min Young) after finally admitting they want to date each other for real.
Exhibit D: My Strange Hero's Kang Bok Soo (Yoo Seung Ho) proving he's the king of this kisseu and making his lover, Son Soo Jung (Jo Bo Ah), pull him in for more.
4. The Locked And Loaded Kiss
These passionate kisseu scenes stand out because of how the female lead wraps her arms around the neck of her lover. Both of them are clearly into it, and it's just one steamy makeout session that's full-on kilig.
For instance, in Touch Your Heart, Oh Yun Seo (Yoo In Na) explains to her BF, Kwon Jung Rok (Lee Dong Wook), how kisses can be faked on cam. Jung Rok retaliates by showing her how it should be done IRL and starts out with the cool guy kiss. Yun Seo then couldn't help but hug him around his neck for a more passionate and totally non-innocent kiss.
In Encounter, Cha Soo Hyun (Song Hye Kyo) and Kim Jin Hyuk (Park Bo Gum) reunite where they first met: Havana, Cuba. They cap off their whole-day date with an extra passionate kiss on the balcony of their hotel room.
But the best version of this kiss definitely belongs to Kang Chul (Lee Jong Suk) and Oh Yeon Joo (Han Hyo Joo) in W: Two Worlds. This happened when Yeon Joo was imprisoned and Kang Chul was finally able to see her. Their epic jailhouse kiss might just be one of the reasons why they won as the Best Couple at the MBC Drama Awards. (Their handcuffed hug was a unique and kinky cherry on top!)
5. The Caress-And-Kiss Makeout Sesh
For this kind of kiss, the guy usually caresses or cradles the girl's face with both hands and then dives in for the ultimate makeout session.
It happened in one pivotal Boys Over Flowers scene when Gu Jun Pyo (Lee Min Ho) defies his eomma for Geum Jan Di (Ku Hye Sun).
My Strange Hero's Kang Bok Soo (Yoo Seung Ho) also showed that it can be a way to make up with your girl...
…Or serve as her ~punishment~, as demonstrated by What's Wrong With Secretary Kim's Lee Young Joon (Park Seo Joon) and Kim Mi So (Park Min Young).
But it's definitely the sweetest after being torn apart by time and divine intervention. Remember Ji Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) and Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) in Goblin?
it's also the best way to start a totally romantic night together! Don't you wish Gong Yoo gives us more scenes like this soon?
There were so many other K-drama kisseu scenes that rocked our fangirling hearts. Which ones were the most unforgettable for you?
