After posting a bunch of clues for the internet to decode, Julia Barretto and Gerald Anderson finally confirm that they're starring in a new movie called Between Maybes. The first-time pair plays the leads in the Japan-set movie written and directed by Jason Paul “JP” Laxamana.
Between Maybes is about “two people who have lost control of their lives,” JP shares on IGTV. Julia plays Hazel Ilagan, a famous actress in the Philippines, and Gerald plays Louie Puyat, whose OFW parents are deported from Japan to the Philippines. JP says, “These two lost souls encounter each other in Japan. Through their unusual relationship, they learn how to regain control of their lives.”
Julia says she can “relate so much” to her character. “[Acting] is what I do every day and I love my craft… Hazel feels like she has no say in anything. But I feel like for her, acting is her home so kahit lumayo siya, uuwi at uuwi siya sa home niya.” Gerald can also relate to his character in the sense that encountering people with personalities different from yours “can help you find yourself again.”
Set in Saga, Japan, the story was inspired by the beautiful, peaceful location. JP says its “brand of quietness” inspired him to write a story that “explores why people isolate themselves.”
