Kathryn Bernardo Talks About Her Obsession With Selena Gomez, Entering Her 20s, And Making Mistakes In The Public Eye

She's a Teen Queen no more.

Kathryn Bernardo has officially said goodbye to her teen years. After turning 20 years old on March 26, the Kapamilya star is trading her crown as the Teen Queen–a title she’s comfortably owned up to these past years–for all the uncertainty that comes with being a 20-something. In other words, Kathryn is ready for change.

In a Cosmo.ph exclusive, Kathryn confidently relates how unafraid she is of opening a new door in her life: Mas nae-excite ako.

Kath is assertive when it comes to making changes, specifically in her career. One of the biggest, and most crucial, is her desire to do action films. Kath's soft and romantic image in her roles on the teleseryes Got 2 Believe and Pangako Sa’Yo, and her blockbuster hit She’s Dating The Gangster, are all tried and tested characters for Kath. Now, she’s up for something a ‘lil more rough:

“I wanna do action. Kasi ‘yan ‘yung hindi ko nagawa. Palaging rom-com, or drama, or horror. Feeling ko ‘yung action ‘yung perfect [genre] for my age now. Kasi pwede na rin ako mag-training sa anong gusto ko–like boxing, or shooting.”

But with these changes comes the certainty of making mistakes especially in the public eye.

Kung may pagsisisihan ako o hindi, basta ang importante wala akong regrets. Gusto ko nagawa ko lahat. Before ganyan ako, [I was afraid to make mistakes], pero now actually feeling ko mas gusto ko ‘yung ako mismo ang nagkakamali and then I’ll learn from my mistakes.”

Having started as a child star in Goin' Bulilit to being one-half of the country’s biggest love teams with Daniel Padilla, Kath excitedly reveals the one woman who serves as her current inspiration/obsession in life: Selena Gomez.

Grabe! As in obsessed ako kay Selena Gomezngayon! Kasi feeling ko siya ‘yung isa sa nag-grow na tinanggap ng tao. Hindi ‘yung nagpaka-wild.”

Their lives may be seen as somewhat parallel–with Selena starting out in Barney, then blossoming into a Disney darling, to having a controversial whirlwind romance with her first love Justin Bieber

Nakita mo rin siya tumanda from Disney and then ngayon sobrang [nagbago] ‘yung music niya, ‘yung looks niya," says Kathryn. "Ohmygod," Kath giddily fangirls over her idol, "Siya talaga ‘yung transformation na nakasama ako sa journey niya as a fan. Kasi gradual [‘yung transformation niya], di niya binigla. Parang lahat tama lang for her age.”

True enough, Kath has also brought along her very own legion of supporters through her childhood, teens, and now, womanhood. With her millions of die-hard fans, Kath leaves all those who’ve seen her grow up with a little something very close to her heart.

Kath herself penned her very first book, “Everyday Kath: Kathryn Bernardo’s 365 Ways To Be A Teen Queen”, a collection of personal tidbits she’s learned along the way–from fashion and beauty, to career and love.

Kathryn will be having her official launch for Everyday Kath on April 10, Sunday at 3pm.
