Earlier this month, Kylie Jenner announced her very special holiday makeup collection, just in time for you to tell all your relatives about it when they ask you what you want for Christmas. Soon thereafter, makeup artist Vlada Haggerty accused Kylie of copying her work for a holiday collection promotional image, and now, according to TMZ, Vlada is threatening Kylie with a lawsuit. The main image in question is this photo of gold powder-covered hands and red lips, posted to Kylie Cosmetics’ Twitter page on Nov. 19.
Vlada shared a similar image to her Instagram on Sept. 24, and after Kylie released her version, she posted a side-by-side of the two photos, asking, “Haven’t you gotten enough ‘inspiration’ from me already?” Back in 2015, Vlada accused Kylie Cosmetics of using one of her images without attribution. The brand later edited their caption to credit Vlada, but according to Vlada, they did not contact her.
Photographer Julia Kuzmenko McKim, who shot Vlada’s version of the gold fingers, also wrote a lengthy blog post explaining the background of the original photo shoot. “It breaks my heart to see how large brands take independent, unprotected artists’ work and use them to multiply their wealth,” she wrote. “In an ideal world, big brands would easily prevent such backlashes by hiring the artists who have already created something that they would love for their own campaigns.” Kylie and Kylie Cosmetics have not yet commented on the accusations or the threatened legal action.
