Another day, another Twitter trend. This time, one of the many trends that took over the popular socmed site is Lord Varys, a character from the hit TV show Game Of Thrones.
For a brief background, sans spoilers: In the realm of Game Of Thrones, Varys is a eunuch who served as the master of whisperers (aka the intelligence adviser and spymaster) for the king (or queen). He did this for King Aerys II Targaryen during his term, for King Robert Baratheon right after, and for Joffrey Baratheon when he assumed the throne. He also served the same role for Daenerys Targaryen. The bottom line is, many rulers came and went, but Varys remained.
Why was the character suddenly trending on Twitter? It was because of two notable quotes from Lord Varys during a conversation about loyalty with Daenerys in Season 7, Episode 2 of the show. One of them goes, "Incompetence should not be rewarded by blind loyalty. As long as I have my eyes, I'll use them." Another one says, "You wish to know where my true loyalties lie? Not with any king or queen, but with the people."

Why were people suddenly posting Lord Varys' quotes on social media? People found the quotes to be timely during our current situation. It was a way for netizens to remind one another to devote their loyalty to those who are in need of it the most—the people—especially when the nation is faced with a crisis like the one brought about by COVID-19.
Currently, frontliners—from those in hospitals to those in supermarkets—are risking their lives to do their parts in the collective fight against COVID-19. Educational institutions, private corporations, and individuals from various industries have offered to devote their assets and expertise to produce the needed resources to aid in COVID-19 efforts.
For instance, UP made a comprehensive dashboard for everything the public needs and wants to know about COVID-19. Meanwhile, Filipino fashion designers offered their talents to address the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontliners by making some themselves. Select local government units have also done their parts in providing aid to their respective communities, like the efforts of Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian, and Alaminos City Mayor Arth Bryan Celeste, among others.
