Among the estimated 25,000 attendees of the Metro Manila Pride event at the Marikina Sports Center were celebrities such as Iza Calzado, Janine Gutierrez, and BJ Pascual who showed up in support of the LGBTQIA+ community.
It was such an outpouring of love that it allowed many to be courageous enough to show their true ~*rainbow*~ colors. One poignant post uploaded a few days after Pride was that of Mari Jasmine, a celebrity host, model, and influential blogger who shared photos of herself with Baka Bukas director Samantha Lee. In it, she reveals, "Pride is about celebrating love, equality, and owning your truth. So here's mine: in the little time I've spent on this earth, I've had the privilege of being in love with both men and women."
It can be recalled that Mari was in a relationship with actor Sam Milby, who shared that they started dating back in 2016 after meeting through social media. In March, however, he acknowledged that they had broken up when he guested on Tonight With Boy Abunda. "She is a very private person, but she is an amazing person," he said.
The wistful note accompanying Mari's pictures, reads, "My dream is to live in a world where I feel safe walking down the street holding my girlfriend's hand. A world where I have the same fundamental human rights that I would be entitled to if I were in a straight, heteronormative relationship." She adds that the Philippines has a long way to go to reach acceptance and equality, and implored those who don't have friends or family that are part of the community to reach out and start learning. "We are only afraid of things we don't know or understand."
Director Sam Lee also shared their photo with the rainbow flag and simply captioned it with "#Pride."
