Will There Be A 'Never Have I Ever' Season 2?

Here's everything we know about the Netflix teen rom-com's next chapter!

Okay, so we can all agree coming-of-age comedies are notoriously hit-or-miss—but if you hit the mark a la Lizzie McGuire or The Breakfast Club, you've probably earned a cult following for life. (Hormonal teenagers are loyal.)

No surprises then that fans were quick to jump on Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling's new Netflix teen rom-com, Never Have I Ever, which chronicles the life and times of one Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a first-generation Indian-American who really, really wants to be cool—and thinks her ticket to popularity is losing her virginity. After the death of her father, Devi finds the walls of her Southern California home more suffocating than ever, and her nerdy demeanor isn't doing her any favors at school. So she decides to go after the hottest man she knows: Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet).

But as any of us who've tried to woo someone out of our league (*raises hand slowly*) know, romance isn't as easy as it looks in the movies. Devi manages to unravel a number of her relationships in pursuit of a new life, and the season ends with her reconciling with her mother before kissing Ben Gross, her former enemy. And as she kisses Ben, well, Paxton calls her. Oh, and Devi might be moving to India. Drama!

So surely there's more to come, right? Here's what we know about a potential Season 2.

There have been no official announcements from Netflix yet, but don't lose hope.

Never Have I Ever debuted April 27, and Netflix likes to take a little time making announcements about future seasons, so don't worry that we haven't heard official confirmation yet. Lang Fisher told Entertainment Tonight she is "hopeful" and "optimistic" for a Season 2.

"I'd love to keep telling the story and come back and see where these characters are," she said. "It was a really fun show to work on and to write. I'm optimistic but nothing's a guarantee."

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has big dreams for Devi's story.

She told Variety she knows nothing about a Season 2 yet, but that doesn't mean she hasn't been dreaming up ideas for her character.

She wants to see three things in Season 2: Devi being more appreciative of her family and friends; Devi confronting her grief over her father’s death; and Devi embracing her South Asian culture. "I think if Devi does those magic three, she might be a little bit more at peace with herself," she said.

Season 2 will likely force Devi to explore her grief.

Given that Never Have I Ever is partially based on Mindy Kaling's life, the actress is eager to see an exploration of grief on the screen.

Mindy told TV Line that she and Lang Fisher "both lost parents, and we were like, 'It would be so great to—in a show that's a comedy show—be able to deal with a character who is unable to handle her grief. Especially in a lot of Asian communities and minority communities, dealing with grief, or mental health, there's still such a stigma attached to it.'"

Season 1 has been a big success.

The series is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also hit No. 1 in the world on Netflix's top 10 list. Given that kind of popularity, it's unlikely Netflix will turn away from a Season 2. Keep your eyes peeled through May—we're bound to get the news eventually.
