Andrea Meza from Mexico was crowned Miss Universe 2020 this week, and while many were happy for her, there were people who said Miss Peru Janick Maceta del Castillo deserved to win instead. On the coronation night, aside from multiple memes, the internet also blew up with posts saying the competition was "luto," aka rigged.
In a video uploaded on her YouTube channel, Pia Wurtzbach discussed the Miss Universe 2020 competition with fellow beauty queens Bianca Guidotti and Carla Lizardo. Pia encouraged everyone not to question the judges' decision and to be happy for the winner. "May kaunting kirot pa rin for Rabiya, but I'm happy with how the pageant turned out. I'm excited for Andrea and I mean that."
Pia's reaction to the Miss Universe 2020 controversies
"I don't like that...hinihimay natin ng sobra yung competition, kasi hindi natin matanggap yung winner, or yung fate ng candidate natin. Sana maging sport tayo. I read some comments na binili daw, o kaya dahil daw maraming Latina sa judges...'Wag natin i-judge yung organization kasi wala na manonood ng Miss Universe kung luto 'to. 'Yon talaga yung napili ng judges, siya talaga yung nanalo, it's her destiny...Let's shake hands and mean it. [Say] congratulations and accept defeat and move on."
Pia added that the message of Miss Universe is for women from all corners of the world to unite and accept each other's differences. Instead, audiences fought and threw jabs at each other on social media. "It's the complete opposite of what we keep saying over and over again—to accept each other." You can watch the full vid below:
