It's been nine years since Rebecca Black's "Friday" music video was posted on YouTube, but I'm pretty sure we all remember how quickly it went viral.
I mean, I still remember who I was talking to when I first watched it. It didn't take long for the Internet to come up with mean memes and jokes—everyone overlooked the fact that they were making fun of a teenager.
Rebecca actually talked about the entire process of recording "Friday" (she wasn't even in high school at the time) in a BuzzFeed video. She actually dressed herself for the video, picking up an outfit at Forever 21 the day before the actual shoot.
She revealed, "My first day back at school was probably one of the weirdest days of my life. When recess came about, all of these people flocked my way because they were so curious. With all of that going on, my parents were trying to figure out how to handle all of the incoming stuff."
On February 10, 2020, exactly nine years since "Friday" was uploaded to the Internet, Rebecca shared an emotional post on Instagram.
She wrote, "Above all things, I just wish I could go back and talk to my 13-year-old self who was terribly ashamed of herself and afraid of the world; to my 15-year-old self who felt like she had nobody to talk to about the depression she faced; to my 17-year-old self who would get to school only to get food thrown at her and her friends; to my 19-year-old self who had almost every producer/songwriter tell me they'd never work with me."
Rebecca admitted that to this day, she constantly reminds herself of her worth: "Every day is a new opportunity to shift your reality and lift your spirit. You are not defined by any one choice or thing. Time heals and nothing is finite. It's a process that's never too late to begin. And so, here we go! This might be a weird thing to post but the honesty feels good, if nothing else."
