It's safe to say that almost everyone's going crazy over Perfect Crown. For the most part, who can resist a perfectly good contract marriage K-drama with a modern monarchy twist, one that's top-billed by the IU and Byeon Woo Seok no less?
The drama has been fairly addictive and kilig-worthy AF. But aside from the romantic scenes, one aspect of it also got us hooked: Gong Seung Yeon.
The acting calibre that Seung Yeon has shown in Perfect Crown was something that really took everyone's breath away. It seems that she has met the perfect role for her prowess. In Perfect Crown, Seung Yeon plays the role of Queen Dowager Yoon Yi Rang (or, in romanized terms, we call her daebi mama). She acts as the sister-in-law of Grand Prince I-an (Woo Seok), the mother of the young king. Her role is no fun, which is the complete opposite of IU's Seong Huiju.

Seung Yeon acts as a dignified, rule-abiding, and respectable queen. She upholds the reputation of their monarchy, even resorting to calculated means if it suits her goals. Early into the show, everybody knows that she's one of the antagonists, aiming to get in the way of the Grand couple.
Despite making every viewer frustrated in her scenes, we still can't take our eyes off her. She looks majestic in every hanbok she wears, and even in casual outfits, she carries herself like royalty. She pulled it all off flawlessly.
That's why, further into this article, let's get to know Gong Seung Yeon more before she entered our lives as daebi mama 😉
(P.S. If you're wondering whether her eye color is real, it is definitely a wonderful shade of brown! Those are not contact lenses.)
Everything You Need To Know About Gong Seung Yeon
She was a former K-pop idol trainee.
First things first, Seung Yeon is one talented woman. She was an SM Entertainment trainee for about seven years. She was slated to debut with Red Velvet; however, life had other plans for her.
In 2012, she took a leap of faith and left SM to pursue acting. She starred as one of the supporting characters in the K-drama, I Love Lee Tae Ri.
Seung Yeon carefully and patiently carved her filmography, starring in multiple supporting roles before getting her well-deserved break. It was in 2018 when she joined BH Entertainment that she got exposed to bigger projects. She was cast in the K-drama, Are You Human?, as the lead star alongside Seo Kang Joon, and together they won the KBS Awards as "Best Couple" for that.
She's TWICE's Jeongyeon's sister.
Truth be told, this is probably a widely known fact about Seung Yeon. Although we believe there are still some who would be surprised to know this. You see, the South Korean entertainment industry is not like in the Philippines, where you would immediately know whose family is with whom.
For Seung Yeon and TWICE's Jeongyeon, it's not unintentional, but the two were a bit low-key about their family relationship in the beginning. Eventually, after the pair had gained prominence in their respective careers, they began opening up more about their sisterhood.
Nowadays, the two would appear on variety show episodes from time to time, showcasing their naturally funny and chaotic sibling energy.
Also, recently, a clip of Jeongyeon tearing up while talking about her older sister was released. "I'm so happy that my sister is doing well these days," Jeongyeon said in a snippet shared by the show, You Quiz On The Block.
Since they're sisters, Seung Yeon's also close with TWICE members. Sometimes, she'd do dance challenges with them! See below for some cuteness overload from Seung Yeon, Nayeon, and Jihyo!

Her role model is an actress.
In 2018, prior to the release of one of her major K-dramas (Are You Human?), Seung Yeon graced the pages of Cosmopolitan Korea. There she talked about love, happiness, and who her role model is. Her role model, like most of us, is Son Ye Jin!
When she defined love and happiness for her at the time, she told Cosmo Korea, "I think that the ultimate love is when you can go through the hardships and troubles and look back on it as something beautiful. And happiness isn't something you seek out, but something you discover every day in the little things."
She's one of the first actors managed by her current agency.
After eight years in the industry, Seung Yeon took another leap of faith by joining a newly established company in 2020. Formed by executives from BH (ICYDK, it's one of the big acting agencies in Korea at the time), VARO Entertainment offered Seung Yeon an exclusive contract with them.
So in 2020, she was one of the three actors first managed by VARO. The other two were Byeon Woo Seok and Park Jung Woo (20th Century Girl)—all three of them were also former BH talents.
This is also why Seung Yeon and Woo Seok became such close friends. They've been together at their agencies, attended company-wide activities, and shared the same team supporting them throughout their careers.
She has acted with Woo Seok in other K-dramas before Perfect Crown.
In one of their Perfect Crown interviews, the cast was asked who among them unexpectedly had great chemistry onscreen. Woo Seok answered him and Seung Yeon. And true enough, everybody will agree that Woo Seok and Seung Yeon had so much chemistry, even if most of their scenes were just them looking at each other and trying to deceive one another.
But it's not the first time that Woo Seok and Seung Yeon have worked together. The two appeared in the 2019 K-drama Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency, where Seung Yeon played the female lead, and Woo Seok was one of the supporting characters.
Fast forward to today, the two are playing lead stars in Perfect Crown, one of the biggest K-dramas of 2026!
We're very happy that Seung Yeon's getting the recognition she so deserves! ❤️
