Nobody appreciates the digital world more than we do, but even we can admit that it’s good to take a break from staring at a screen all day. Journaling is something you can do as an alternative. Most people think journaling is all about pouring your heart out into pages and pages of heart-wrenching poetry, but it really doesn’t have to be like that. It can just be undistracted time you set aside to write and relax, or even vent. There are no strict rules when it comes to journaling—you don’t have to write in complete sentences, or start with “Dear Diary,” or do it at a specific time of the day. Others don’t even write much; they just doodle!

Your journal can be the safe space where you share something you can’t stop thinking about, confess feelings people might not understand, log ideas that inspire you, and plan for the future. Even science thinks you should give it a try! Journaling has been proven to reduce blood pressure, improve your mood and your memory, reduce depressive symptoms, and alter social behaviors.
