Here's How Long Your Visa Application Will Take, Based On The Country You're Traveling To

Canada

For Canada, you will need to plan early. While Filipino tourists across various forums share visa success stories, citing three- to five-day waiting periods—this is not the norm. As of October 2025, the Canadian government says the average waiting time for a Filipino applying for a tourist visa is 24 days.

They are careful to warn that this timeframe does not include the time it takes to send the application between the visa application center and the embassy, nor does it include the time you need to give your biometrics. So add some allowance and round it up to one month. But if your application is incomplete, this could stretch out to three(!) months. This isn’t exactly the timeline you want for a spontaneous trip, especially when prices skyrocket around the holidays, so apply now if you're hoping for a white Christmas.

  • Average processing time: 24 days, but can extend to three months in some cases.

  • Express option: None officially.

Japan

What's great about Japan is that they have multiple visa centers to apply to, including in the Visayas and Mindanao. The drawback is that the visa centers are at capacity with a very high number of applicants hoping to fulfill their ramen, sakura, and Studio Ghibli dreams.

According to the visa center that handles Japan applications, processing takes a minimum of six business days, from the day the application is received by the embassy. This number goes up to 10 days if you're applying from Cebu or Davao. With allowance for transferring the application from the visa center to the embassy, you'll have to round up to two to three weeks of processing time. That means at least three to four weeks between your visa appointment and getting your passport back. This number can grow to two months if it's peak tourist season.

  • Average processing time: Six to 10 business days, depending on the volume of applicants.

  • Express option: None officially.

  • Tip: Apply at least 60 to 90 days before your trip to avoid heartache and stress.

South Korea

As of August 2025, the South Korean embassy has extended its average processing time to 10 business days. Just as with Canada and Japan, this processing time does not include your visa appointment and the sending of documents from one office to another. Business days also mean no weekends.

Do the math: A good turnaround time would be three weeks. Luckily, South Korea offers an express option that cuts the processing time in half. As of writing, the South Korean embassy's visa page does not list the price of the express option, but know that they (and many other visa application centers) only take cash.

  • Average processing time: 10 business days

  • Express option: Five business days

Schengen countries (France, Spain, Germany, Italy, etc.)

The best thing about receiving the Schengen visa is that it opens all of the European Union—from cobblestones and croissants to ski lodges and fondue—to visa holders. The second best thing might be that it gets granted relatively quickly: only 15 calendar days on average. The catch is that booking a visa appointment can get tricky, especially for high-traffic countries like France—with some folks having to wait a month or two before they can even get their foot in the door.

Still, there's a benefit to applying to these popular destinations since their embassies are used to Filipino travelers and some (like the Netherlands, granting 95.8% in the last few years) even have a historically high approval rate for Filipino tourist visa applicants. The tide might be shifting though: 2025 statistics show that the Czech Republic and Greece currently top the list with 98.3% and 97.1% approval rates.

  • Average processing time: 15 calendar days, typically.

  • Express option: None officially, for Filipinos applying in the Philippines

  • Note: Reports show that waiting periods can be as short as three days or as long as 60, especially during travel peaks.

United Kingdom

You're 15 business days away from afternoon tea, double-decker buses, and Love Island. But as with all the other countries on this list, the UK government is careful to emphasize that processing times only begin once you've provided your biometric information in person at your visa appointment. In the same respect, the processing time ends once you've received the email notification saying that a decision has been made on your application. Like all the others above, you will have to account for the time it takes to send your passport back to you.

With the UK, visa processing time may take longer than the standard 15 business days (a.k.a. three weeks) if your information requires further consideration. Fortunately, you can pay for a faster decision if you need it. Applicants have the choice of priority (£500) or super priority (£1000) services. Priority decisions come within five working days, while super priority comes by the next working day.

  • Average processing time: 15 business days. Holidays and weekends are not included.

  • Express options:

    • Priority Service: Five business days.

    • Super Priority Service: 24 hours—unless you apply on a weekend or holiday, then you'll have to wait until the next business day.

United States

Gotta be honest here: The current administration's border control policies and government shutdown are throwing a wrench into the research for this article, and more importantly, travel plans from around the world. In the wake of the chaos, take comfort in the fact that you will get your approval (or refusal) by the end of your visa interview.

But with 100,000+ applicants a year, it's getting the appointment that's tough. Generally, people have been able to book appointments within one to 40 calendar days. The general tip is to start the application process three months before your intended travel date to account for potential delays.

  • Average processing time: After immediate approval, it generally takes three to five business days to get your passport back.

  • Biggest hurdle: Scheduling the interview—it can take much longer than the actual processing itself.

  • Expedited appointments: Possible in emergencies or special cases.

Things to note

  • Apply early. Ideally, as soon as your destination's window opens, which is usually three to six months ahead.

  • Triple-check embassy websites. Processing times fluctuate depending on the season, embassy location, and current global chaos. Most embassies have a running list of relevant announcements that will be crucial to check.

  • Complete your documents. Missing documents cause delays, if not outright visa refusals.

  • Track your application. Most embassies or visa centers have online trackers and hotlines—use them! The people behind them are customer service experts who want to help you.

A spontaneous trip abroad is every travel girl's dream, but your visa officer might not share your sense of adventure. So plan ahead, be conscious of your timelines, and let your future self enjoy that stress-free airport selfie, with passport (and visa) proudly in hand.
