Visitor Arrivals In The Philippines Increase By 14.37 Percent, According To DOT

More than six million people visited the Philippines from January to September 2019.

The tourism industry in the Philippines continues to flourish this year, with a 14.37 percent increase in visitor arrivals compared to last year, according to the Department of Tourism.

DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said, "the figures look very promising, and we are glad that more tourists are visiting us in light of the accolades received by the Philippines and our destinations throughout the year."

From January to September 2019, a total of 6,161,503 people visited the country, compared to 5,387,458 in 2018. Even lean months for the tourism industry in the Philippines such as September helped the country receive a total of 606,553 visitors, which is 17.09 percent more than last year.

Most of the country's visitors came from Korea, China, USA, Japan, and Taiwan. Korea has consistently topped the list for the first three quarters of the year with a total of 1,450,792 visitors, followed by China with 1,359,817. Meanwhile, 792,619 people came from the USA, 518,211 from Japan, and 252,578 from Taiwan.

Among the recognitions received by the Philippines this year is ranking eighth in the 20 Most Favorite Countries in the World of the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, garnering a score of 90.63 from 600,000 readers.

During the Asia and Oceania Gala Ceremony of the World Travel Awards 2019, the DOT was announced as "Asia's Leading Tourism Board," surpassing tourism boards from 11 other countries. In the same event, the Philippines was also recognized as "Asia’s Leading Dive Destination."

Secretary Puyat said, "We are greatly honored and thankful for this recent recognition for the Philippines at the World Travel Awards. A triumph as great as this simply could not be possible without the combined hard work from the government, industry partners, and tourism stakeholders in realizing a more upward tourism industry for the country. This is not the DOT's alone but for all Filipinos to celebrate."
