If you’re a student using a Beep Card for your daily commute, it might be time to say goodbye to that old card this September.

ICYDK, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) just announced that a brand-new Beep Card for students will be launching this month. And it automatically comes with a 50%(!) discount on fares. Yes, you read that right—it's not just the usual 20% off for students.

Everything You Need To Know About The Student Beep Card

According to DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, this specialized Beep Card won't just be for students but will also cover other groups entitled to transport discounts, such as persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens.

The new card will be white and personalized, featuring the cardholder's name and classification (student, senior citizen, or PWD).

"If you are a student, you can go to any station of the MRT 3 and LRT 1 and 2 in September, show your ID, and right then and there, your Beep card will be printed one time," Secretary Vince said.

However, for students, the card will only be valid for one year.

"After one year, your card won't work anymore. So you have to go back to a train station, show your student ID for the next year so that you can get a new student Beep card," Dizon explained.

To prevent scalping during the rollout, Secretary Vince said they are working closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT). This move is part of the government's push to modernize and digitalize the country's transport system.

Printing of the discounted Beep Cards will begin this September. Here’s how to get yours:
  • Bring your valid student ID.
  • Go to any MRT-3, LRT-1, or LRT-2 station and present your ID.
  • Fill out the necessary forms at the station. (According to Secretary Vince, they are working on digitalizing this process, but for now, it will be done in person).
