Relationship breakups don't have to be messy, but they sure will be painful for both parties involved. Still, the pain usually comes with purpose: growth, healing, and the space to glow up. That's exactly how Bela Padilla saw her breakup with her Swiss ex-boyfriend, Norman Bay.

It wasn't because they fell out of love, or there was someone else coming in between them. Parting ways with Norman was all about the growth and career that they're both chasing for themselves.

This year, Bela returned to the Philippines to pursue her passion for acting and making films. It was a huge decision that she made after almost five(!) years of living in London. Truthfully, she was a lot closer to Norman at the time, who was based in Switzerland.

But moving back to Manila in 2025 made them face their reality as a couple. "We had a talk, like it was a very mature conversation," she began telling their breakup story in a vlog with Karen Davila. She disclosed asking Norman about his plans for the years to come, and if coming to the Philippines would be an option for him.

"He very bluntly said no," Bela stated. But she didn't harbor ill feelings for that, because admittedly, she'd say the same if asked about staying in the UK for good—and yes, even if it means getting to marry Norman.

"If he asked me back then, 'If I ask you right now to get married so you would stay, would you say yes?' I would've also said no. So I feel like we both knew where we had to be. And he has such a beautiful career also in London, he has such a good job. I feel like he has found his purpose also," Bela said.

It's been a good five years for Bela and Norman, who made their long-distance relationship fun and full of love. But of course, breakups are painful. "I cried a lot. I just saw something recently na parang the first one who speaks up bleeds first," Bela noted.

The actress divulged bringing up the conversation that led to their breakup. She explained, "I was the one who had to bring up the conversation, so I guess I was in pain way before he was. I don't know if he saw it too, and he just didn't wanna speak up, or he didn't wanna say anything, but I had to be the bigger person, I guess, and bring up the conversation."

Bela Padilla and Norman Ben Bay's past romance

In previous interviews, Bela had openly expressed her love for her former non-showbiz partner. Although it seems that being an LDR couple contributed to the end of their romance, Bela once noted how being in a long-distance relationship with Nroman kept them strong together.

"Every time we see each other again, it's like the first time. Nahihiya ako, may initial kilig and awkwardness dahil ang tagal niyo hindi nagkita. I always look forward to those moments," she previously shared in a podcast.

Norman and Bela weren't the PDA type on social media, but when it mattered, they sure knew how to declare their love for each other through heartfelt posts. The last one that Bela wrote for Norman was back in April.

Bela greeted Norman with a happy birthday saying, "Very grateful we crossed paths in this lifetime✨ may this double-digit year be the most fun so far and bring you to many new places, and may no one ever figure out your actual last name, cause it’s still funny to me that people call you Norman Bay."

At present, Bela assures that she's still good friends with Norman.
