So there's a running joke (pun intended!) online that run clubs may have overtaken Tinder and Bumble as everyone's go-to dating app. Considering the surge in their popularity in recent months, we think they might be onto something!

Of course, run clubs have been around for as long as anyone can remember, and the idea of them being a great way to meet new people is nothing new. But when the Internet became fascinated by the notion of Strava—a tracking app for runners and cyclists—being a low-key dating app for fitness enthusiasts, an entirely new narrative quickly gained traction.

This short clip shows you see what we mean:

It also helps that content creators-slash-fitness buffs like Ashley Rivera are having a blast making a fuzz about it on social media. Her "Your pace or mine?" line was super benta!

Plus, it certainly doesn't hurt that virtually everyone you'll meet in these run clubs isas a matter of factvibrant, friendly, and yes, easy on the eyes. That likely explains why groups like the Rockwell Run Club have a very healthy following on Instagram.

Why should you join a running club?

But in all seriousness, it's not hard to figure out how this little joke came about. Whether you're a casual or competitive runner, what these clubs never fail to provide is a feel-good social environment that allows for meaningful conversations and connections that might not happen elsewhere. And if you happen to find love in one of these groups, there's no rule (yet) against dating your fellow clubmate. So why not go with the flow and run with it?

Now, while it goes without saying, your primary reason for joining a run club should still be to prioritize health and fitness—friendships, connections, and meeting attractive people are just a bonus. There's also the matter of convenience and preference, like your ideal time of day, location, and running pace. Don't compromise your comfort just because someone catches your eye, or you might end up quitting!

Here are some tips to keep in mind before signing up for a run club:

Identify your goals.

It's a given that you're interested in joining a run club, but what are you trying to achieve by doing so? Whether it's improving your running time, training for a race, or meeting new people, having clear goals will help you find the right club. As your goals evolve over time, you'll benefit most from a club that offers flexibility in its programs.

Explore before you decide.

You're likely already eyeing a specific run club based on what you saw on social media, but there are more than a few clubs going around today, so practice due diligence just in case. Some groups are initiated by running brands like On Running, Nike, and Hoka, and then there are clubs led by renowned coaches like Ken Mendiola and Patrick Rubin

There are also groups based on location, such as the aforementioned Rockwell Run Club (PowerPlant Mall area), Ayala Triads (Ayala Triangle Courtyard), Red Light Run Club (Poblacion), and EZ Run Club (Pasig-Kapitolyo). Chances are there are also lesser-known but equally thriving running communities in your area, so be sure to check those, too!

Don't feel pressured to commit right away!

If you have more than one group on your shortlist, don't hesitate to test the waters by joining each for a session or two before deciding which one to commit to. Feel out the group's vibe, running pace, fitness level, and your dynamic with the coach and fellow runners. Oh, and by the way, it's totally fine to belong to multiple run clubs, so if your body and schedule can handle the commitment, don't let us stop you from joining them!

Prep yourself for the necessary fees.

Some clubs have membership fees to cover expenses like race entries, club gear, or event costs, so be sure to understand the financial commitment before joining. And while we're on the subject, investing in good running shoes and other essential gear is just as crucial. It might seem like a pain in your wallet at first, but this investment will likely pay off in the long run.
