Jor-El Espina is the brains behind the "Bomberong" a unique bomber jacket inspired by traditional barongs. This Ilonggo designer works with local weavers to create his beautiful and intricate designs. In an email interview with Cosmopolitan Philippines, Jor-El discussed the Bomberong's design, the process behind it, and what's next for him.

How did you think of incorporating the design of a barong into a bomber jacket?

It all started when I wanted to wear something Filipino but in a non-traditional way. I attended a Filipiniana event in a bomberong, and there, the bomberong was born.

What inspired these designs?

I've always been fascinated with the weaves and embroideries found in pieces inside the closet of my old folks!

Can you describe the experience of working with Ilonggo weavers?

I always have a great time working with the artisans. Working with them widens my knowledge about culture and tradition.

Where can these jackets be purchased?

My items can be bought in my atelier and are also available via my instagram. We will be joining the Artefino fair this year, too. Also, watch out for the upcoming trade fairs.

What's next for you and your designs?

In the next collection, we will be working with the Panay Bukidnon tribe and their intricate hand embroidery.
