Getting the right foundation by yourself can be intimidating. A bottle costs a lot, so you're pressured to get the absolute correct shade at first try. It's a good thing UK-based pro-makeup artist and YouTuber Wayne Goss made our lives easier by uploading a short and sweet video explaining the basics of getting the perfect match. Here are our takeaways:
It's better to go darker than lighter. We already know this, but he emphasized the importance of following the golden rule when it comes to foundations: He said that whatever shade we'll be putting on the face should match the whole body—the head shouldn't float!
He further explained that if the face appears to be lighter, it's still safer to get a darker shade. To make it simple: Do not use foundation to whiten your skin tone.
Put a stripe on the forehead. The forehead is the darkest area of our face because it's the spot the sun hits the most, so swatching the product there will guarantee an accurate match. Also, there's no need to worry about the possible color difference of the T-zone to the rest of the face. It won't really be *that* obvious.
It's okay to use more than one bottle. For those with skin tones leaning on the ebony side, he suggested testing the foundation on the cheeks to get the right match. If you find that the outer area of the face is deeper than the center, Wayne advised using two different shades.
