Parabens are a type of preservative that prolongs the shelf life of your beauty products, especially if you keep them in a warm, damp environment. You may think that it's life-saving for your favorite creams and serums, but that's not exactly the case.
It's believed that when you use products with parabens, they can enter your body through your skin and disrupt hormone function by producing too much estrogen and increasing the growth of breast cells, which can lead to tumors. But its link to breast cancer has never been proven—and that's where the real problem comes in. Since there's no proof, numerous beauty companies still include it in their products as it is cheap to mass-produce.
Still, it's better to be safe than sorry! Even if parabens don't directly cause breast cancer, it's still somehow connected to it and we don't want to take any chances [via WebMD]. So if you're looking to buy any new skincare, hair, and makeup products, make sure to check the ingredients list for the three most common forms: butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.
With that in mind, it's not enough to just check for parabens. Do a little more research to see if the product you're about to purchase also contains other ingredients that could harm your skin and/or body in any way. It's good to know what you're putting on your face and body!
