On April 2, 2020, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases announced that wearing a face mask is now mandatory when leaving the house to get essential supplies. According to Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, all kinds of makeshift face masks—"earloop masks, indigenous, reusable or do-it-yourself masks, face shields, handkerchiefs, or such other protective equipment"—can be used.
Whatever face mask you may be using, whether it's a surgical or DIY one, you might notice that your skin has been breaking out more than usual lately. Because the mask needs to be snug on your face to ensure maximum protection, it also causes more friction. Your breathing is also trapped, creating a humid environment that can cause a buildup of sweat, oil, and dirt, which can lead to pimples.
Despite that, there are tips that you can follow to keep your skin clear even when you wear a face mask for a long period of time. Keep on reading to know more:
-
Moisturize your face before you wear your mask.
Before you wear your mask and head out, apply a thick moisturizer all over your face, especially on the parts the mask touches. This layer will create a protective barrier between your skin and the mask to avoid further friction and irritation.
-
Skip wearing makeup as much as possible.
Wearing heavy foundation, concealer, and powder can cause your pores to be more congested, especially while under a face mask. If you still want to wear makeup, keep everything above the mask only, such as filling in your arches or applying mascara. Make sure to double cleanse with an oil-based balm and a regular facial wash at the end of the day to prevent breakouts.
-
Wash your face after removing your mask.
When you get home, make sure to thoroughly wash your face with a cleanser to remove dirt, sweat, and oil buildup. Try to use one that's infused with salicylic acid to help slough away dead skin cells and excess sebum.

Treat breakouts with extra care.
If you're already dealing with some breakouts, resist the urge of picking at them. Dab an anti-acne gel with salicylic acid or tea tree oil on the affected areas or place some pimple patches on the zits to help them heal.
