Living in a tropical country has its benefits: The freedom to wear hubadera outfits all-year-round, an abundance of delicious fruits, and of course, easy access to the world's most beautiful beaches located throughout the whole archipelago.
Speaking of the beach, we’re sure that there’s one thing you always have in your luggage during every trip—sunscreen! Protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays is a must before you hit the water. But did you know that most sunscreens pose a risk to marine life? Which is why we suggest switching to reef-safe sunscreen—a relatively new type of sunblock that not only cares for you but also for the environment.
(Ed's note: It's highly recommended to apply SPF product every single day and not just when you're at a summer trip.)
What are reef-safe sunscreens?
Basically, reef-safe sunscreens are sunblocks that are made without oxybenzone and octinoxate. Studies have shown that these two components, which are found in most common sunscreens, harm marine life. How? They may damage coral DNA by limiting their ability to reproduce. Also, these UV-absorbing chemicals contribute to coral bleaching which happens when “the life-sustaining algae that normally [lives] on coral vanishes, due to changes in ocean temperatures, stress, or pollution.”
