The rainy season is upon us—and it looks like we're expecting more typhoons to come. While some may be looking for ways to distract from the cold, dreary weather, we say, enjoy it! Crazy Rich Asians
Starring: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeo
Netflix description: “When she joins her boyfriend on a trip to his native Singapore, Rachel Chu discovers his family’s luxurious wealth and faces his disapproving mother.”
Why it’s worth watching: There’s no denying that Crazy Rich Asians is a visually stunning film, peppered with aerial shots of Singapore’s most popular landmarks and lots and lots of lavish parties. It’s fun, glossy, and it’ll take you back to Singy.
Always Be My Maybe (2019)
Starring: Ali Wong, Randall Park
Netflix description: “Reunited after 15 years, famous chef Sasha and hometown musician Marcus feel the old sparks of attraction but struggle to adapt to each other’s worlds.”
Why it’s worth watching: It’s a modern—and truthfully, more realistic—take on When Harry Met Sally (another movie I desperately love, btw, no hate here). Always Be My Maybe takes culture and gender equality into account, something not a lot of romantic comedies think (or care) to do, adding just the right amount of cheesiness into the mix.
Before Sunrise
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy
Netflix description: “An American backpacker strikes up a conversation with a woman on the train to Vienna and persuades her to spend his last day in Europe with him.”
Why it’s worth watching: This film is TIMELESS (and so are the two other movies in the trilogy). It starts like many other romantic movies: with a classic meet-cute while they’re heading in two different directions. With limited time, Celine and Jesse roam around Vienna before they have to part ways the following day. You’ll walk away believing that anything can happen and your story can change in an instant.
Little Women (2019)
Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh
Netflix description: “Determined to make her own way in the 1860s, a writer looks back at the tough yet tender times spent with her three spirited sisters and a close chum.”
Why it’s worth watching: We all know this isn’t the first book-to-movie adaptation of Little Women, but it still found a way to tell the March sisters’ stories in a refreshing and captivating way. It’s a wonderful tribute to sisterhood!
Someone Great
Starring: Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, DeWanda Wise
Netflix description: “On the heels of a blindsiding breakup, music journalist Jenny braces for a new beginning—and one last adventure with her closest friends.”
Why it’s worth watching: It has all the ingredients you love in a rom-com: a dress-up montage, a Selena singalong, three best friends, a wild night-out, and of course, intense heartbreak. We’re sure you’ve experienced at least one of these things, right? ;)
