The country is experiencing a rise in cases of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). According to the Department of Health (DOH), HIV cases have climbed to 36 per day. This number is based on the HIV/AIDS registry prepared by the health department’s Epidemiology Bureau in August 2019.
PhilStar reported that according to the DOH, in August 2019, there was a total of 1,228 HIV cases recorded with 70 deaths. Of this number, 165 cases progressed into the “advanced infection” or AIDS.
From January to August 2019, the number of HIV/AIDS cases in the country reached 8,711. The DOH also said that nine of the new cases are pregnant women, five from the National Capital Region, two from Central Visayas, and one case each from Central Luzon and Southern Mindanao. Males who were infected with HIV totaled 1,170 cases.
The most common mode of transmission of HIV is through sexual contact which had 1,202 cases. According to the report, “Among the newly-diagnosed HIV patients, 748 cases were transmitted through male-to-male sex; 310 through sex with both male and female, and 144 through male-to-female sex.”
