If you’re not sure what we’re talking about, a few months ago, Selena Gomez told Elle about the secret to her youthful glow and healthy physique. Sel revealed, “I have a sweat bed, which looks like a burrito that I wrap myself up in, and I sweat for about 45 minutes.” She added, “You lie in these beds in a sweatsuit, and they wrap you. [It] releases all the toxins of your body...kind of the equivalent of a sauna.”
Expert Jennifer Wider cautions against the misuse of the word “toxins.” Wider says, “When a diet, cleanse, or exercise regimen touts the benefits of cleansing your body of ‘toxins,’ it probably refers to ‘toxic’ substances we come across in our daily lives—germs and other substances.”
That said, our bodies flush out toxins naturally, which is why Wider believes that health trends made popular by some celebrities aren’t exactly the most effective. One benefit to sweating, however, is that the salt in our perspiration wards off bacteria, so it prevents them from entering our bodies.
Another expert, Dr. Marc Leavey, supports Wider’s assertion, adding, “There is no physiologic mechanism to excrete toxins of concern through your sweat.” Both Wider and Leavey admit that it’s possible for Selena Gomez’s sweat bed routine to give her a healthy glow because sweating dilates the skin and boosts blood circulation.
But if you’re not a celebrity with your own sweat bed (lol), you can always just hop in a sauna.
