Body diversity ambassador Ashley Graham got cheeky with people who keep calling her "brave" whenever she posts a bikini shot. Ashley posted this unretouched photo of herself and captioned it, "When they call you 'brave..'"
If you're wondering why this is an issue, it's because wearing swimwear (or clothing, in general) isn't a brave act. Bravery, by definition, is "the quality or state of having or showing mental or moral strength to face danger, fear, or difficulty."
When people call Ashley, or any other fat person, "brave" for something as common as wearing a bathing suit, it's a spectacle. If you think about it, we don't call Kendall Jenner or Gigi Hadid brave for walking in their underwear at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, right?
"You're so brave" reads like a backhanded compliment. When you say, "you're so brave," fat women hear, "You're so brave because if I had your body, I would never be able to wear that."
By letting fat beauties do their ~*own thing*~, we can finally start normalizing bodies that fall outside the realm of what's currently accepted by society. So the next time you see your friend baring her mermaid thighs at the beach, just call her cute instead. ;)
