When you've been a commuter most of your life, you're vigilant of your surroundings. It's normal to be praning with securing your belongings! When you're out, you are not sure how safe the place is, especially when you're in public areas like malls and buses. You can't control the actions of the people around you but you can make it harder for those with bad intentions to become their victims.

Here are some tips that will help you keep your personal belongings safe and secure. (BTW these tips are also handy when you're traveling to an unfamiliar place)

  1. Wear crossbody bags.

When your bag is right in front of you, it will be harder for anyone to get a hold of your stuff. You can also opt for a bag that's made with a protective lining that won't budge even when thieves slash it with a blade.

  2. Hug your bag if you're in crowded places.

This is pretty obvious. When your belongings are super close to your body, it gives a signal that you're alert.

  3. Place your belongings in pouches.

If you're a big fan of tote bags, storing your prized possessions in pouches will make finding keys or tiny stuff easier. It's also an effective way secure your valuables! When your phone and wallet are in pouches, it will be challenging for pickpockets to decipher where your valuables really are. Also, it's going to be super obvious when they attempt to pull out a pouch from your bag.

  4. Opt for RFID-blocking wallets.

Thieves can scan your credit details from a distance using an RFID-reading device. Protect yourself by getting a wallet that can block this kind of device.

  5. Use your undies to store money.

Your bra is an amazing place to store valuables! My lola had little bags sewn on her bras—she placed money there when she had to purchase or pay for something expensive. I have a friend who attached a small pouch to his briefs which he wore when he paid his daughter's tuition fee. You can also pin a tiny purse on the waistband of your pants.

  6. Bring pepper spray.

If all else fails, bring out the pepper spray! Using it to defend yourself from criminals will protect your belongings and yourself. You can also bring a tiny pin and poke it on the neck. Although the perpetrator won't exactly bleed, the discomfort is enough to distract him to give you time to escape.
