As I was scrolling through Instagram, I noticed that picnics (especially outdoor ones) are becoming more and more popular, especially with Gen Z. People actually set up blankets on the grass, bring food like mini charcuterie or grazing boards stored in baskets, and plop down to eat, read a book, and take a picture or two! TBH, the ~*aesthetic*~ set-ups were more than enough for me to try it out myself, but first, I had to dig deeper to see what makes outdoor picnics so uso RN. Keep on reading to learn more:
What are outdoor picnics and why are they so popular?
Outdoor picnics are exactly what you envision them to be: A picnic done in an open area, such as your own backyard, parks, or on the back of a truck, complete with blankets on the grass and food brought in baskets. Picnics have always been a ~thing~ before, but they rose to popularity during the pandemic as a safe way of hanging out with your family, friends, or S.O. while remaining socially distant from other people. Plus, they make for very good content on Instagram! ;)
Here are just some of the reasons people are organizing picnic dates during the pandemic:
It's safer than hanging out in public areas like the mall.
In a mall, you have to work harder to remain one to two feet away from others. In a picnic setting, it's usually done in a very large open area like a park, or in a private outdoor place like your backyard or on the back of your truck. Plus, if you do organize your own picnic, you can be sure that the food you make and the materials you bring are also safe and properly sanitized.
It's very Instagrammable.
NGL, this is probably one of the main reasons why people organize picnics: They're super Instagrammable. It's also the perfect time to live out your ~*cottagecore*~ aesthetic. Time to bring out your puff-sleeve dresses!
It's easy to set up.
One of the advantages of outdoor picnics is how *easy* it is to set up. All you need are a couple of blankets, some food, and maybe your laptop or tablet so you can watch movies and TV series as you enjoy your day out in the sun!Continue reading below ↓
Are outdoor picnics safe?
Yes. As long as you take the proper precautions (staying far away from other people, sanitizing everything, and wearing face shields and masks), you can create a fun and safe outdoor picnic.
How do I create my own outdoor picnic set-up?
The complexity of your set-up is up to you. You can go for a simple one that only consists of blankets, food, and your Netflix or YouTube account for some easy viewing. However, if you can't be bothered, to set everything up, there is a picnic set-up service that will do the work for you! All you have to do is show up at the location.
