"Mahangin ba sa labas?" is not the reaction we want when we're trying to rock a messy-sexy 'do. To make sure you pull off this style like the ultimate cool girl (think: Taylor Swift, Anne Curtis, Jenna Dewan), try these easy tricks.
Tip #1: Get the right cut.
It all starts here. Do your research, bring your pegs, and find a hairstylist who has an eye for creating stylish, modern cuts (hint: Jing Monis is behind some of the modern and chic lobs we see on celebs like Joey Mead and Anne Curtis). If you have a little extra cash to spend, invest in color and highlights, too. This will help add more movement to your textured cut.
Tip #2: Ditch the comb.
Instead, use your fingers to detangle your strands while you blow dry to help keep the natural waves in your hair intact. Bonus tip: If you want a little lift and volume, blow dry in the opposite direction of your hair growth.
Tip #3: You need to use the right products.
Scrunching in a little mousse while your hair is damp and a texturizing cream right after you put down your curling iron (or straightener) is key. This will give your locks the grit it needs to separate your layers and make them look stylishly piecey (read: not spiky). Need some extra hold? Mist with a light hairspray to keep your roughed-up strands in place.
Tip #4: Invest in hot tools.
A curling iron with a 1- to 1.5-inch barrel is a great way to create loose, messy waves. Once your hair is dry, just grab random sections (about two inches thick) and start curling away! Twist the barrel away from your face and don’t include the ends of your hair when you clamp down your iron to create that messy, imperfect vibe. P.S. If you’re on a budget and already have a flat iron, that’ll work, too!
Tip #5: Try this wave relaxing trick.
Because defined curls are a no-no, celebrity stylist Kristin Ess basically changed our lives when she revealed this hair hack. We think it’s her secret to creating the messy-sexy lob that Lauren Conrad is famous for. Really, just watch and prepare to get your mind blown.
