If you’re a K-pop fan, we’re pretty sure you’ve heard about MAMAMOO. Their songs, style, and influence as artists have already reached audiences on a global scale. If this is your first time reading about them, you have come to the right place.
MAMAMOO debuted in 2014 under RBW Entertainment, and have come so far in their six years in the industry as a group and as solo performers. They've won numerous awards, become chart-toppers, and have been recognized as trendsetters in South Korea. In a video by YouTube influencers Danny Kim and David Kim (aka DKDKTV), they asked a few Koreans what they think about the K-pop girl group. One described MAMAMOO as “a group likable regardless of gender”, while another mentioned that they are not idols but rather artists, and we couldn’t agree more. This just shows how MAMAMOO is known for their undeniable talent and stellar music.
The group consists of four members with distinct personalities, and trust us when we say that whenever you hear their voices, you can easily differentiate them. They have their unique styles and charms as individuals, but they are always in *perfect* harmony when they perform together as a group. Add that to their explosive stage performances that feel like a concert every time, and how they slowly change beauty standards—it’s safe to say that MAMAMOO is a cut above the rest. This is what makes them beautiful.
You’re probably enticed now by this one-of-a-kind girl group, now allow us to introduce you the vocal queens that form MAMAMOO:
Solar: Leader, vocalist, visual
29-year-old Kim Yong Sun, who goes by the stage name Solar (which perfectly describes her bright personality), is the eldest and considered as the mom of MAMAMOO (mom-mamoo? We tried, lol). Before she became an idol, Solar wanted to become a flight attendant until she realized she’s not fit for the job. We’re thanking the ~universe~ for bringing us a powerful singer instead!
Aside from being good at singing, she’s also good at vlogging! Solar has her own YouTube channel called solarsido (we see what you did there ~musically~). Her older sister, whom she’s really close with, is also featured in her vlogs. In her videos, you can see Solar’s *sunny* character, which will probably brighten your day, too.
Moonbyul: Rapper, performer
Born Moon Byul Yi, we’re betting that this ’92 liner is your next ultimate girl crush. The 28-year-old’s deep talking voice that feels like it came from the depths of the earth will simply amaze you, and when she starts rapping, prepare to pick up your jaw from the floor. Still don’t believe us? Watch how she nailed her rap part when MAMAMOO did their own rendition of AOA’s “Good Luck” in Mnet’s Queendom:
She might set the stage on fire with her performances, but here’s something that will make you soft: Moonbyul is very family-oriented, and she has a tattoo of her beloved on her arm. This girl is so precious, must protect. *insert puppy dog eyes*
Wheein: Vocalist, performer
Jung Wheein, 25 years old, with a contagious laugh that will make you say, “oh god, she’s gold.” Wheein is a hilarious gem, who's like that one friend who can make you laugh so much with her crazy antics until your stomach hurts. This cutie is also a food lover, and even names herself as “snack queen” (the only crown we want, tbh).
When she’s not munching on her faves, Wheein is found doing song covers (she did her own version of Kehlani’s “Honey”—in which the singer noticed her and hopes to meet her soon!), collaborating with other Korean artists, shining on her own while she sings K-drama OSTs, or doing BFF things with her friend of 10 years and co-MAMAMOO member, Hwasa. Watch as they relive their middle school memories here:
Hwasa: Vocalist, rapper, maknae
The youngest member of MAMAMOO (she’s also 25 years old, but 3 months after Wheein) is usually mistaken to be older due to her mature image, but she’s actually this down-to-earth, simple, homebody that you can totally relate to (she was a hot topic before for not wearing a bra when she went to the airport—honestly, we stan!). Hwasa is allergic to pets, but that doesn’t stop her from having her own lion, in the form of a stuffed toy. This queen finds ways, we must say.
MAMAMOO’s resident vocalist loves to eat, and the whole world can definitely attest to that. In one of her appearances in MBC’s I Live Alone, she went to a gopchang (intestine) restaurant, savored all the good stuff on her own, and caused a craze in South Korea (we swear, watching her eat makes us really hungry). She’s a natural when it comes to variety shows, that she even won the Rookie Award for Variety in 2018!
