Let me guess: you're drinking something cold right now—an iced coffee or a v crispy glass of soda that promises instant refreshment. Cold drinks are practically a lifestyle, especially in a tropical country like the Philippines. So the idea of intentionally drinking hot water can sound a little… unhinged. And yet, TikTok is fully on board.

Across the app, users are trading their iced drinks for steaming mugs of plain water, claiming it helps with bloating, digestion, period cramps, and overall well-being. While it may feel like a new wellness "hack," drinking hot water is deeply rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where warmth has always been considered key to supporting the body. This "trend" is actually tradition.

What's the deal with the hot water trend?

On TikTok, users—particularly those from Chinese and East Asian backgrounds—have joked about finally feeling "validated" as hot water discourse racks up millions of views.

User @roro_youraznbigsis posted saying, "Hot water is the way to go. If you get bloated, hot water. If you have period cramps, hot water… First thing in the morning, when you wake up, hot water. And your life will change. You'll start to feel better."

In TCM, there's a concept called yang sheng, which literally translates to "nourishing life." Health is closely tied to balance, particularly the balance between warmth and cold inside the body. Central to this belief is qi, or life energy, which needs to flow freely for the body to function at its best. Warmth is believed to support that flow, particularly when it comes to digestion.

According to Dr. Ping Wang, a TCM practitioner, the stomach and spleen prefer warmth to properly break down food and absorb nutrients. When you constantly drink icy beverages, your body has to work overtime to warm things up before digestion can even begin. Over time, this may contribute to bloating, heaviness, fatigue, or what TCM describes as "internal dampness."

In contrast, warm or hot water is considered gentler on the system. Many people report feeling calmer, less bloated, and more settled after switching to warm beverages, particularly in the morning or after meals. This emphasis on warmth extends beyond drinks, influencing food choices, daily habits, and even lifestyle rituals within TCM.

Does drinking hot water actually work?

TCM looks at wellness through a different lens. Instead of isolating symptoms, it looks at how daily habits shape long-term balance. Warm beverages may help some people feel more relaxed, comfortable, and less prone to digestive discomfort—effects that can be both physical and psychological.

Drinking something warm tends to slow you down, encouraging more mindful consumption. While hot water isn't a cure-all, many of its benefits come from consistency, routine, and actually paying attention to how your body responds.

How do you make hot water a part of your routine?

Incorporating hot water into your routine doesn't require breaking up with iced drinks entirely. A simple way to ease into it is first thing in the morning.

Instead of reaching for a cold beverage, try a mug of warm water or hot water with lemon or honey. For smoothie lovers, TCM suggests "warming" them up by adding ingredients like ginger or cinnamon to balance out their cooling nature. Throughout the day, choosing warm or room-temperature drinks whenever possible can make a difference. And no, it doesn't have to be scalding. Lukewarm is still better than ice-cold.

Warm foods support the shift, too. Soups, congee, and steamed vegetables all align with TCM's emphasis on nourishment through warmth—they're comfort foods for a reason!

Ultimately, the real wellness win is making sure you're drinking enough water, regardless of temperature.
