K-dramas driven by revenge are my *ultimate* favorites. I can never go wrong with them because there are no dull moments, the main character's back story is always gripping, and they deliver social messages that are relevant in these times. Plus, it's so satisfying to see the underdog succeed in their plans! Netflix's latest original series is a great example of a K-drama about vengeance, and I seriously can talk about it all day.
The Glory brings us to the life of Moon Dong Eun whose life was crushed due to school violence. When she was a student, Dong Eun was bullied and she was helpless—no one reached out to her, not even the school's administrators, the police, and her own family. Dong Eun experienced endless suffering during her younger years and by the time she chose to get back at those who abused her (including the bystanders), she believed in one thing: There will be no forgiveness, but there will be no glory either.
If you enjoyed watching The Glory just like me, here are interesting facts about the Netflix series and its cast members:
1. It's created by K-drama masters.
For its year-ender, Netflix chose two well-respected names in the industry. The Glory is written by Kim Eun Sook, the woman behind the iconic K-dramas Lovers In Paris, Secret Garden, Goblin, and Descendants Of The Sun, to name a few. She's joined by renowned director Ahn Gil Ho who helmed Rooftop Prince, Stranger, and Happiness.
2. There's a reason why it's titled The Glory.
Screenwriter Eun Sook's main goal for the K-drama is to let everyone know that bullying victims are never to be blamed for the pain they've gone through. They only want a genuine apology from their offenders. "[The Glory is about] recovering their dignity, honor, and glory that was lost to them the moment they fell as a victim to violence was genuine recovery for them," she said in the press interview.
3. It's Song Hye Kyo's first thriller series.
And she did so well! If you're going to ask me, The Glory is Hye Kyo at her best and I truly enjoyed seeing this new side of her. Eun Sook writernim also commended the actress for her acting chops, saying that Hye Kyo is "smart, calm, and bold" just like Dong Eun and that she hasn't seen traces of her former characters. Bravo!
4. The Glory marks Lim Ji Yeon's first villain role.
For some reason, the way Lim Ji Yeon smiles in the drama just gives me the chills—which means that her acting is effective!
5. Lee Do Hyun's pet dog *played* a big part in his preparations for The Glory.
Even when he's at home, Lee Do Hyun continued rehearsing for his role. He actually had his fur baby Ga Eul as a ~stand-in~ and he talks to her as if she's Ga Eul!
P.S: The actor also read his script in one sitting because he can't wait to see how the story will end. The Glory is that fascinating!
6. Song Hye Kyo gave suggestions for her character.
Dong Eun dedicated her entire life to meticulously plotting revenge for her perpetrators. To fully embody this character, Hye Kyo suggested that Dong Eun's costume, hair, and makeup to feel like she has no time to care about other things apart from her much-awaited payback! "I wanted to make her look as humorless and stale as possible, like buttoning up all of my shirt buttons. I went for a natural look with hair and make-up since she would not have had time for a glow-up because she is consumed with her revenge plot," Hye Kyo mentioned.
7. Part two of The Glory is coming ~real soon.~
By soon, we mean March 2023! The Glory is actually 16 episodes long and the last eight eps are coming in less than three months. Yay!
