There are times when we want to cover our acne to make ourselves feel better and more confident. But, we worry that the cosmetics might clog the pores and do more harm than good. Thankfully, there are techniques and products that won't aggravate the breakouts. Check out our recommendations below!

Makeup Tips for Acne-Prone Skin

  1. Choose non-comedogenic makeup products.

Read the label! Check if the product says "non-comedogenic" or "oil-free." Foundations and other bases with this kind of formula won't worsen your acne or turn your complexion into a greaseball by midday.

  2. Prep your skin first.

Before applying makeup, it's important to prep the canvas. Massage a thin layer of oil-free moisturizer to keep the oil-moisture balance and prevent your T-zone from being too shiny. You may also apply a spot treatment to some active zits if needed.

Optional: After your skincare products have been properly absorbed by the skin, apply a thin layer of pore-blurring or mattifying primer. You may also work with a green-toned base to cancel out the redness.

  3. Work with thin layers.

You may be tempted to slap on a thick layer of foundation or concealer to quickly cover up the acne, but this will be counter-intuitive. It will just slip off, and the finish will look unnatural.

  4. Learn to spot-conceal.

For pimples that need more coverage, apply a green-toned concealer to color-correct the area. Then gently dab a thin layer of pigmented concealer. Set with translucent powder to lock everything in.

  5. Wash your face every night.

Whatever your skin type is, you must always wash your skin before going to bed! Remove makeup with an oil-based cleanser (one that is made for acne-prone skin) or micellar water. Then follow up with a sulfate-free facial wash.

  6. Clean your makeup brushes and sponges every week.

To prevent irritation and the spread of bacteria, clean your makeup tools every week. Product and dead skin accumulate on the brush bristles and your sponge!

  7. Let your skin breathe.

To *really* let your pimples heal, you have to let them breathe. Wear makeup only when necessary. If you're conscious of your acne, try pimple patches. These will cover, protect, and heal your angry zit!
