Sometimes, we think that layering skincare products on our faces will speed up our journey to clear glowing skin. Sadly, it could be the opposite. There is a possibility that we overdo skincare, especially when the products are loaded with the best things like AHAs, BHAs, and other actives. The ugly a result? A damaged skin barrier.
Fast facts about a thing called skin barrier:
- It's the outer layer of the skin (aka the stratum corneum) that acts as a protective layer of our epidermis against external aggressors like UV rays, dust, dirt, bacteria, and pollution.
- The skin barrier's composition is often compared to brick and mortar: The cells are the bricks and lipids (natural oils) act as mortar.
- It is responsible for the skin's firmness and suppleness.
- It's delicate and should be handled with care!
- Once it's damaged, skincare problems like acne, redness, and patchy skin happen.
How does one damage the skin barrier?
When we layer the wrong ingredients or go crazy with exfoliating acids, there is a high risk that we get irritated skin. Although we can't really *see*, we may have scrubbed our skin too raw, resulting in a damaged skin barrier. Skincare gurus like Hyram and Lab Muffin (Michelle) have been nonstop warning us about the dangerous effects of over-using exfoliating acids in their IG posts and vlogs.
Another culprit of a damaged skin barrier? Over-cleansing! Some facial wash formulas may be too harsh that they strip away your natural oils.
The bottom line
Too much of a good thing is bad. Go easy on your skin. It's a delicate layer of protection that you need to take care of the right way.
