Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray undoubtedly slayed it at the pageant's Preliminary Competition which was held yesterday, December 13. Her soon-to-be iconic evening gown was designed by Mak Tumangand is inspired by the legendary Ibong Adarna!
Like her national costume, Catriona's evening gown proudly showed off Pinoy heritage and culture. In an Instagram post, designer Mak Tumang shared the story behind his amazing creation, which he called "ADARNA: The Blazing Siren."

Mak wrote, "The 'Ibong Adarna' is a mythological pulchritudinous bird that could change in several fascinating guises. Its enchanting voice can enable complete healing to anyone who hears it."
"Some artists liken it to the mythological Phoenix where it recurrently regenerates itself by arising amidst a spectacle of flames and candescence. This makes it a fitting symbol of resilience, rising and rebirth."
The designer likened the mythological Adarna to the beauty queen, saying, "Catriona has a resilient, tenacious, and unwavering spirit. Her voice is truly captivating literally and figuratively. She uses it to influence, advance her timely causes and both melt and heal hearts. Her will-power and burning passion drive her to make every Filipino proud in whatever she does. She is the blazing Adarna!" The gown's design also draws inspiration from the iconic Miss Universe Mikimoto Crown. ICYMI, Mak designed Cat's two other gowns for the competition, which were the result of seven sketches, four prototypes, and the collective effort of 16 artists over 2,712 hours (113 days)! The materials used for the gowns had a total cost of P1,025,091.
The 67th Miss Universe will be held at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday morning, December 17.
