During quarantine, I'd have to admit that my TikTok usage has spiked. I've never been so engorged in watching short videos about any topic under the sun. One of the most followed TikTok accounts is @newt, aka Newton Nguyen or @milktpapi on Twitter. His cooking videos are simply fun to watch and it's inspiring TikTok users to practice their hidden culinary skills. His clips feature incredibly simple recipes (nothing too fancy and intimidating) and the finished products look sooo yummy!
Plus, Newton's got a cool sense of humor. You'll hear low-key jokes or funny side comments about the dish he's whipping up. Also, it doesn't hurt that he has a soothing voice and good looks. ;)
According to his interview with the LA Times, he used to make Spam musubi with his mom and sell it when he was younger. He said that his mom has excellent coking skills and has worked for restaurants in the past.
He became more serious with home-cooking in 2019 to help him cope with depression. He started by watching YouTube videos. Then, he decided that he would create his own content—bite-sized versions of cooking vids made for viewers with a short attention span. He created a TikTok account and posted some clips on his Twitter, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Take a look at his TikTok vids and tell me if these aren't enough to convince you to do a bit of kitchen magic!
