Not all penises were created equal, we know that much. Some are showers, some are growers, and some might have a bend in them. But according to sex expert Tracey Cox, there might be more to it than just a slightly unusual aesthetic.
It could be caused by a little-known health issue called Peyronie's Disease, which Tracey describes as "a condition that is caused by scar tissue called plaque forming inside the penis and causing it to bend when erect."
While the sex expert notes that it might sound like something to laugh about, "in reality, it's a serious condition, which can make sex extremely painful or even impossible." Apparently, doctors don't really know what causes it, "meaning all men are potentially at risk of developing the condition one day," says Tracey.
Although it's thought that around 5 to 7% of the world's male population are affected by Peyronie's, a lot of men don't open up about it due to embarrassment and reluctance to see a doctor. But because of the impact it can have on your sex life, Tracey advises seeing a medical expert. "Peyronie's is not just an embarrassing condition that can be hidden under a pair of jeans," she says.
In a study of men with Peyronie's disease, 77% said that they were affected psychologically because of it, and one in four having reported experiencing relationship problems as a result, meaning partners suffer too.
But it's easily treatable, either with surgery, injections, traction therapy or oral medicines, according to advice and information website This Is Peyronies. So help a guy out if you think he might be suffering, and "accidentally" send him a link to this article, yeah?
