Dandruff is not just about flakes that fall on your shoulders. What comes with it is an itchy or maybe even a bleeding scalp. (Yikes!) Plus, those flakes that you see could be a sign of skin diseases like seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. Nevertheless, these all tell that your locks and scalp need attention ASAP. Ahead, everything you need to know about treating dandruff.
What causes dandruff?
Dandruff is a fungal infection caused by Malassezia, a type of yeast on the scalp. Contrary to popular belief, dry scalp doesn't trigger dandruff, but an oily scalp does. The moister the environment, the more Malassezia thrives. If you suspect that you just have a dry scalp, it could be that the flakes are just dead skin and product buildup.
How can we treat dandruff?
Before you start searching for dandruff shampoos, you must determine what ~really~ causes the flakes and itch.
- If you have psoriasis or eczema, dandruff shampoos won't do the trick. Talk to your dermatologist to seek medical advice.
- You've got seborrheic dermatitis when you've got an inflamed oily scalp. This happens when there is an overproduction of yeast on the scalp. Look for these ingredients that are known to fight dandruff on the shampoo bottle: zinc pyrithione and ketoconazole.
- Excess product buildup plus a dry scalp can result in flakes, too! To get rid of this, try a once-a-week session of either a scalp scrub or a clarifying shampoo.
