We know most of you already have that beach trip locked in—because honestly, who says no to a quick island escape? 🤔 And while you're probably busy organizing your bikinis, sunscreen, skincare pouch, and camera-ready outfits, there's one thing that usually gets forgotten until it's too late: your hair care essentials.

Summer beauty is often all about keeping things light and effortless. Minimal makeup, breezy outfits, and easy accessories usually take center stage, which also means your hair naturally becomes part of the whole look. Whether it's soft beach waves, slicked-back buns, or just letting your natural texture do its thing, healthy-looking hair can completely pull a summer look together.

But while we enjoy all the beach fun, our hair also goes through a lot during this season. Between long hours under the sun, salty seawater, chlorine from pool dips, and humid weather, your strands can quickly go from soft and shiny to dry, tangled, and stressed. So before you zip up your luggage, here's everything you need to know about keeping your hair healthy all season long.

What happens to your hair and scalp in the summer heat?

There's nothing wrong with wanting to spend the entire day swimming, chasing sunsets, and squeezing every last photo opportunity before golden hour disappears. But whether you're into surfing, island-hopping, freediving, or simply lounging by the shore, your hair is exposed to multiple stressors at once on beach trips.

Cosmopolitan Philippines spoke with Cherry Reyes, Creative Director of Toni&Guy Philippines, who explained why hair tends to become more difficult to manage during summer. "The combination of heat, humidity, UV exposure, saltwater, and chlorine strips moisture from the hair very quickly," she shared. According to her, many clients return from vacation complaining about dryness, rough texture, tangles, faded hair color, and increased frizz.

And it's not just the strands you should pay attention to. According to veteran hairstylist and Creations Salon CEO Lourd Ramos, the scalp also takes a hit during this season. "During summer, [the] scalp is burnt and becomes sensitive. Some burn their scalps due to over exposure to sun," he explained.

That sensitivity can eventually lead to itchiness, irritation, or flaking, especially for people who spend long hours outdoors without enough protection. Lourd also pointed out that sea breeze and salt air can speed up color fading due to oxidation, particularly for hair that has already been bleached, rebonded, or chemically treated. Since these processes already weaken the hair's outer layer, chemically treated hair tends to become rougher, drier, and more vulnerable to UV exposure.

How can you prep your hair before a beach trip?

The good news is you do not have to skip beach trips just to save your hair. According to Cherry, proper preparation and hydration can make a huge difference before your vacation even starts.

For those with colored hair, Cherry recommends using products specifically formulated to help protect against fading and moisture loss. One of her go-to recommendations is the Label.M Vibrant Rose Colour Care Shampoo & Conditioner, which helps shield hair from environmental damage and UV exposure while helping maintain hair color for longer.

She also shared that leave-in conditioners become especially useful during beach season because they act as an extra layer of protection throughout the day. The Label.M Diamond Dust Nourishing Leave-In Conditioner, for example, contains ingredients like coconut oil and white rose petal oils that help soften dry strands and lock in moisture. These nourishing oils are known for helping reduce protein loss in hair strands, which is important because excessive sun and salt exposure can weaken the hair cuticle over time.

Meanwhile, Lourd suggests using hair masks consistently before beach trips to help protect both the scalp and the hair itself. One treatment he recommends is Davines' Purity Circle mask, which is designed to help remove impurities while keeping the scalp balanced. Hair masks usually work best when left on for around 15 to 20 minutes under a shower cap before rinsing with cool water.

For those who barely have time for a full hair care routine, Lourd recommends using lightweight hair oils instead. According to him, applying just two to three drops of L'Oréal Absolut Repair Oil after showering can already help reduce dryness and make the hair easier to manage throughout the day.

How do you take care of your hair after a beach trip?

Post-beach hair care matters just as much as the prep stage. Even after a fun trip, your hair still needs time to recover from prolonged sun exposure, salt buildup, chlorine, and dehydration.

Cherry shared that at Toni&Guy, they usually recommend restorative treatments focused on bringing moisture back into the hair while helping reduce breakage and dryness. Some of their treatments include Moisture Infusion, M-Plex Miracle Repair, Strengthen & Resist, and Anti-Frizz & Smooth treatments.

According to her, consultations are important because different hair conditions require different types of repair and hydration. Treatment sessions usually range from around P3,000 to P6,000 depending on the hair length and level of damage.

Lourd also recommends deep-conditioning treatments for people experiencing extremely dry scalp and hair after summer trips. "We love L'Oréal Hair Spa for super dehydrated scalp and hair. This will rebalance both hair and scalp," he shared.

For hair that already feels severely dry or damaged, he suggests trying the L'Oréal Absolut Repair Molecular Treatment, which is priced at P1,130. According to him, the treatment helps restore softness and manageability and can last for up to 35 washes.

Aside from these treatments, hairstylists also advise avoiding excessive heat styling immediately after beach vacations since the hair is already recovering from environmental stress. Giving your hair a few days away from curling irons, bleaching sessions, and harsh styling products can help prevent further dryness and breakage.

What ingredients should you actually look for in your summer hair care?

If you're shopping for summer hair care products, don't just fall for cute packaging—check the ingredients list too. According to Cherry, ingredients like amino acids, keratin, collagen, natural oils, and UV-protecting components can help keep hair softer, smoother, and less prone to dryness during beach season.

One ingredient she highly recommends is hyaluronic acid. While it's more commonly used in skincare, it also works wonders for the hair because it helps attract and hold moisture.

Meanwhile, Lourd recommends nourishing oils like argan oil and roucou oil to help seal moisture into the hair. Roucou oil is also packed with antioxidants that can help protect hair while adding shine.

At the same time, Cherry advises avoiding harsh shampoos and alcohol-heavy styling products during summer since these can strip moisture faster. Gentle sulfate-free shampoos paired with hydrating conditioners or masks are usually a better choice after long beach or pool days.
