If you’ve spent an ungodly amount of time just scrolling through TikTok, chances are, you’ve seen a foundation hack that promises to make it look like you’re wearing a filter IRL. Shared by user @ridaaaamat, it involves changing up the order of how you would normally apply your base products. She claims that your makeup will stay on and be crease-free all day.

When I watched her hack, I knew I had to try it out for myself to see if it really works. I can’t even tell you how many times I have ~broadcasted~ to the internet that I have oily skin. I had to find out if my base makeup would last on my complexion.

According to her, this is how you should apply your base products:

  • Moisturizer
  • Translucent powder
  • Setting spray
  • Primer
  • Foundation

It goes against every rule of basic makeup application, which made me even more curious to try it out and see if there’s any truth to it. Check out my TikTok ~recreation~ of the hack:

First, I applied my SNAILWHITE facial cream. It’s a good choice for prepping your skin if you're going to wear makeup. It has a tacky texture, which makes it a good base for the rest of the products to stick on. Then, I dusted a light layer of the Nichido Final Powder all over my face and set everything using the Anne Clutz x Luxe Organix Beauty Mist.

After, I applied my Shiseido Waso Poreless Matte Primer. Admittedly, it felt a little weird placing it on top of my powder, but I just did it, hoping to see good results. For the last step, I put on my Shiseido Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing Foundation with a damp beauty sponge. I finished the rest of my makeup (brows, eyeliner, blush, lipstick, and highlight), and spritzed on a final misting of my setting spray for good measure.

When I checked my appearance on my phone camera, I was shocked, to say the least. My skin looked airbrushed—it was like I used a beauty filter! I applied my makeup in the morning and worked from eight a.m. to nine p.m. By the end of the day, I could definitely see a bit of shine, but my beat was still intact. I was impressed.

It was a bit more full-coverage than I would normally go for, though, so I don’t think I would wear this much makeup every day. For special events though, I definitely will! I’m never going back to the ~conventional~ way of applying your base.
