Everything You Need To Know About Getting A Brazilian Wax

Before we begin, allow us to say one thing: Body hair is completely normal—don't let society (or your S.O.!) tell you otherwise. Remember that getting rid of ~extra~ hair is a choice you make for yourself.

That said, if you're keen on keeping a maintenance routine for your bikini area but don’t like the hassle of shaving regularly, a Brazilian wax is something worth looking into. Ahead, we discuss everything you need to know about this procedure—from pain level, cost, and aftercare tips:

What is a Brazilian wax?

Brazilian wax is just one of the many methods of hair removal. The technician uses a special wax (either hot or cold), adheres it to your skin, and rips it away in one fluid motion. They repeat this step until your vagina is *completely* hair-free.

How is a Brazilian wax different from a bikini wax?

When you get a bikini wax, the technician focuses more on the front and sides, aka what would be visible when wearing a swimsuit. Whereas in a Brazilian wax, everything (!!!) is removed—front, sides, back, and everything in between. And yes, by everything, we mean including your butt, too! You may opt to leave a bit of hair (landing strip, triangle) or keep it completely bare. The choice is up to you.

Do I need to do any prep before getting a Brazilian wax?

Even though your technician has seen (and waxed) a million and one vaginas, you still need to do your part to make their work easier. If you have a little bush going on, you can trim it (don’t shave!) to about half to a quarter of an inch. Shaving within the days or weeks leading up to your appointment will only cause your pubic hair to grow in different lengths, making it harder for the wax to grip on them.

If it’s the pain you’re worried about, you may pop a painkiller at least two hours before your appointment. This will also help reduce inflammation and sensitivity post-waxing.

Is getting a Brazilian wax painful?

This is usually the question that puts off a lot of people from booking their appointment: “Is it painful?” Any procedure that involves ripping out your hair from its root is going to hurt. The good news, however, is that when you start waxing consistently, your pubic hair grows back finer and softer, making your next sessions a lot more bearable than the first.

How much does one Brazilian waxing session cost?

Be warned: A Brazilian is more expensive than a regular bikini wax since more areas will be covered. Be prepared to shell out P550 to P1,800, depending on the waxing salon you go to.

What is a Brazilian wax procedure like?

Knowing exactly what will happen during your session can help ease your anxiety. Don’t be afraid to ask your technician any questions! Here’s what usually goes down in a regular sesh:

  1. The technician will liberally apply powder on your skin. This will prevent the wax from sticking to your skin.
  2. The technician will dip a wooden stick into a pot of wax and spread it on your skin and hair in the direction of growth. Then, they will apply a cloth strip over the wax, pressing down on it firmly so that the hair, wax, and cloth stick together.
  3. Once the wax has cooled down, the technician will pull the strip off in one fluid motion. They will continue this step until you’re completely hair-free. Also, since everything must go in a Brazilian wax sesh, you may be asked to turn over or go on all fours to get the hair between your butt. Again, don’t feel embarrassed—this is just business as usual for your technician. Another good news? This part won’t hurt as much!
  4. Once the main waxing is over, your technician may use a tweezer to pluck any stray hairs to make sure you won’t feel any itchiness. They might also apply a soothing cream over the waxed areas.

I survived my first Brazilian waxing session! What's next?

After your session, refrain from working out, having sex, going to the beach or pool, or showering with hot water immediately. Make sure that you wear loose clothing for the next few days to let the area ~breathe~. You also need to exfoliate regularly to get the dead skin off the surface. Leaving them will trap them in the hair follicles, which can cause ingrown hairs.

How much time do I have until my next Brazilian waxing session?

It takes about three to four weeks for your hair to start growing back, though this can be longer or shorter, depending on your hair's growth cycle. You’ll know it’s time to book your appointment when your hair is as long as a rice grain.
