The true essence of being a minimalist is all about paring down your belongings to essential items that you truly use. This means you choose items that you bring into your life that will *really* serve your needs.

When it comes to skincare, it follows the same concept: Purchase only what you will use. Applying minimalism to your routine means you get to save time and money. It's easier to be consistent too because your regimen takes a few minutes and you won't need to spend a lot! Plus, you won't worry about your skincare products taking over your vanity table or cabinets.

Below are some tips to help you carefully edit your skincare lineup, without compromising your glass skin goals:

(Ed's note: Everyone should apply at least SPF30 every day to prevent damage from UVA and UVB rays, aka aging and pigmentation. Do not ever skip this step!)

  1. Identify your skin’s needs.

Knowing your skin type is the first step to creating an effective skincare routine. From here, you can discern the active ingredients you need to be looking for in product labels. Here’s a shortlist of popular skincare add-ons and their benefits:

Salicylic acid - Exfoliates deep beneath the pores.

Glycolic acid - Boosts skin cell renewal; reveals radiance

Tea tree oil - Treats breakouts

Vitamin C - Brightens discoloration and dark spots

Niacinamide - Clears the skin; brightens

Hyaluronic Acid – Keeps the skin moisturized and soft

    Collagen - Retains skin elasticity

Peptides - Keeps the skin looking youthful.

Retinol - Prevents signs of aging.

  2. Cleanse the right way.

Clean skin is essential in making sure your skincare products can work their way deep into the pores. Choose one that’s made for your skin type. If you can, count 60 seconds while massaging it on wet skin to allow the formula’s ingredients to activate.

  3. Nourish and treat.

This is the juicy part: Applying serums! This is the step when you put on a product that can help address your skincare concerns. Serums are a good addition because they’ve got potent formulas that are loaded with active ingredients. Refer to the list of popular add-ons above to help you decide which product to get.

  4. Seal with a moisturizer.

Dermatologists advise that a moisturizer is a must to keep the skin barrier healthy and resilient from environmental aggressors. Oily skin should go for gel formulas, while dry and normal skin may try rich creams. Here’s a complete guide if you need recommendations for your skin type.

  5. Don’t be too strict with yourself.

Be familiar with the essential skincare steps—cleanse, treat, and moisturize—but be open to altering it every now and then. There are times when you need to add a serum or face oil for an extra nourishing boost and that’s totally fine. Another good example of customizing your regimen would be using a spot treatment on random breakouts or applying eye cream if you’re worried about crow’s feet. If you think you need a toner in your routine, by all means, include it.

  6. Use multitasking products.

A good way to make the most out of your skincare routine is to add multitasking products. For example, a hydrating toner that’s enriched with serum-like properties or one that can work as a face mist, too.

  7. Rotate skincare products.

It’s okay to introduce new skincare products if you think your current one isn’t working or the weather changes are affecting your skin condition. Patch test to see if your skin would react. If it passes the test, count four weeks and check for positive changes on your skin. You may opt to switch one product (not everything entirely) so you can assess if the newbie is hiyang on your complexion.
