If there's an *underrated* Netflix Original K-drama that we highly recommend, that would be Juvenile Justice. The law series has a gripping storyline that looks closely at delinquents and the shocking crimes they've committed. It also puts the spotlight on South Korea's Juvenile Protection Act—the law which states that those under the age of 14 are not criminally liable.
Juvenile Justice is top-billed by veteran actress Kim Hye Soo who plays judge Kim Eun Seok. She detests young offenders and she'll do everything in her power to make sure that they are punished.
In episodes one and two, Kim Eun Seok handled the Yeonhwa Elementary School Murder Case where a nine-year-old boy was mutilated and killed. The initial suspect is 13-year-old Baek Sung Woo who claims that he suffers from schizophrenia. During the court trial, he laughed at what he has done and said, "I heard kids under 14 don't go to prison, even if they kill someone." This scene sent shivers down our spine.
We were totally impressed by Baek Sung Woo's chilling performance but what surprised us is the actress (yes, you read that right) that portrayed him! Everyone, meet Lee Yeon.
The 27-year-old (international age) is relatively new in the K-entertainment industry and she made her small screen debut in the 2020 drama, Find Me In Your Memory. Lee Yeon also appeared in a couple of movies and was a cast member in another Netflix Original titled D.P. Here, she plays Ahn Soo Jin, the younger sister of Ahn Jun Ho (Jung Hae In).
Lee Yeon revealed in an interview with Sports Chosun that she had to gain five kilos for her role as Baek Sung Woo, but she lost weight for her re-appearance in episode 10. The actress also added that she put a bandage on her upper body and focused more on her appearance than her voice in portraying the said character.
