Veteran actor Han Suk Kyu has been in the industry for more than three decades, with multiple awards under his belt for his top-tier acting. He's dubbed as an actor who can guarantee box office success, with his many films that have raked in millions of viewers. In terms of his K-drama portfolio, we can't forget how Dr. Romantic—one of Han Suk Kyu's most notable works—has garnered double-digit ratings for both of its seasons. Our Kim Sa Bu's *power* is no joke, and we're excited to see more of him this year as he makes his highly-anticipated return to the small screen!
As we wait for his latest K-drama to air (plus the third season of Dr. Romantic), let's binge-watch some of his past series with the help of this guide:
1. Tree With Deep Roots (2011)
Who else is in it: Jang Hyuk, Shin Se Kyung
Adapted from the novel of the same name, the title of Tree With Deep Roots (also known as Deep Rooted Tree) is *inspired* by a poem that tells how trees with deep roots are hard to sway. This sageuk drama shows King Sejong (Han Suk Kyu) and his creation of the Korean alphabet, as well as his background as part of the royal family. Fun fact: Song Joong Ki played the younger version of Han Suk Kyu's character here! The series also marks the veteran actor's comeback after starring in movies for 16 years.
2. Secret Door (2014)
Han Suk Kyu leads another period drama and this time, he portrays King Seongjo who doesn't see eye to eye with his son (Lee Je Hoon). As the leader, King Yeongjo aims to continue his power across the land and make sure that he's followed by everyone. However, his son Yi Sun is the complete opposite and he dreams of equality in their kingdom. Secret Door is equal parts historical, politics, drama, and mystery, so prepare for a roller coaster ride of emotions.
3. Dr. Romantic (2016)
This crowd favorite earned Han Suk Kyu the Daesang (Grand Prize) trophy at the SBS Drama Awards! Dr. Romantic follows the life of Boo Yong Joo, a triple-board certified surgeon who's well-recognized for his skills. He used to work in a prestigious hospital in the city but because of a certain incident, he became a low-key doctor and he changed his identity. He's now Kim Sa Bu and he works at Doldam Hospital which is located on the outskirts of Seoul. Kim Sa Bu is not the type you'll get along with easily, but he'll teach you life lessons that you'll forever keep. As time goes by, the residents in Doldam Hospital felt more comfortable working with him, and they strive to become doctors who are not after fame and power.
4. Watcher (2019)
Who else is in it: Seo Kang Joon, Kim Hyun Joo
Witness Han Suk Kyu as detective Do Chi Kwang in this crime drama under OCN, aka the CJ E&M-owned channel that is home to the best Korean crime thrillers. Alongside police officer Kim Young Goon (Seo Kang Joon) and lawyer Han Tae Joo (Kim Hyun Joo), Chi Kwang tries to find answers to a mysterious situation. The three were actually connected in the past because of a murder case, and they were soon reunited to chase after the suspect.
5. Dr. Romantic 2 (2020)
Kim Sa Bu is back and he has new doctors to mentor! The first season of Dr. Romantic did so well that a sequel was released, which was equally successful. Here, Kim Sa Bu goes back to his former hospital in the city to look for a new general surgeon. He did not just find one but two mentees, and one of them has a tragic past. Prepare your tissues as you watch Dr. Romantic 2 because there's a scene with one of our fave characters that made us cry so hard, huhu.
6. Maybe A Little Spicy Today (TBA)
This Watcha (a Korean streaming platform) Original series is based on the true story of a writer named Kang Chang Rae. According to reports, the story in the drama is similar to the one you'll find in a kitchen diary and is about a husband (Han Suk Kyu) who looks after his wife after she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Just by reading its plot, we're already sure that Maybe A Little Spicy Today is a tearjerker.
