There's no denying that in the past year or so, people have dedicated a great deal of time, money, and effort into their personal spaces. You probably rearranged your furniture, cleaned out your closet, experimented with trendy home decor, or tried to fit as many plants as possible into your cozy room. And it might feel like you're ~almost~ there, but there's still a bare corner you have no idea what to do with.

We suggest going with something bold and quirky—a pop of pattern that's hard to ignore. The team behind Sandy Cheeks and Sandy Cheers have launched Sandy Home, featuring a collection of rug mirrors they worked on with Syndrome Supply! In an exclusive interview, Cosmopolitan spoke to founders Maika Cruz and Alex Jimenez about their new collection.

What's the story behind Sandy Home? How did you decide to partner up with Syndrome Supply?

Maika and Alex: "The idea to create Sandy Home started in April 2021, when we went
into lockdown again. It's been a year of pivots, but this one seemed to be the natural next step. Our Sandy brand extensions always reflect where we, the founders, are in life. We started Sandy Cheeks during the peak of Laboracay; Sandy Cheers during our personal wedding seasons; and now that we have our own houses, we have Sandy Home.

Our mission is to stay true to being 100 percent manufactured in the Philippines. We hope to achieve this through meaningful collaborations with different local brands, artisans, and craftsmen. With so many options coming in from other countries, we think that this is a great opportunity for us and our fellow local artists to compete in the global Pinterest-y driven market. We can push each other to try different things or at least give each other the space to create something different from what they usually do with their own brands.

We partnered with Syndrome Supply because they are one of the, if not the first, pioneers of custom rugs in the Philippines. They're known for their top-notch quality and attention to detail. We also appreciate that they only use premium materials to ensure that the products last longer. They're very creative, as seen in their clothing collections and so if there's anyone who can bring our vision to life, it's them."

Can you tell us a little bit about your first collection?

"Quirky rugs and tufted mirrors are all over Pinterest and it's been a cool Scandinavian girl staple for quite some time now. We thought that there's no way our local artisans couldn't make this, too. There's no need for us to be jealous of what we see abroad when we can put our personal spin on it and locally manufacture it just as well.

Bold, bright, and unapologetically freeit's the best way to celebrate little corners of your home.

The rug mirror is the perfect star of our first-ever home collection because it's true to the Sandy brand through and through. Bold, bright, and unapologetically freeit's the best way to celebrate little corners of your home. It's nice to inject a little vibrancy in our daily space every chance we get."

What's been the best part of creating your first collection?

"It's the journey from sketch to final product. The initial sketch completely evolves once you consider all the materials and techniques to be used. Thanks to this collection, we learned a thing or two about making rugs and have a newfound respect for the nitty gritty that goes behind the scenes. Seeing it come to life, resting on our desks, and taking our first sample selfie has been the most rewarding part."

What are the challenges you faced during the process?

"Since we're still in the middle of a pandemic and Syndrome Supply is based in Angeles, Pampanga, turnaround time took longer than usual. Things such as swatch approvals and final finish couldn't be decided digitally so both sides had to practice a lot of patience and trust in each other. It was also a humbling experience to know that not everything you initially envision ends up in the final product so you always need to keep an open mind to get the best end results."

What can Sandy Home customers look forward to in the future?

"We'll be collaborating with more local brands and artisans for our future collections as well. We're excited to continue creating unique everyday home pieces that you never imagined to be elevated or made special. Be sure to make space for Sandy Home because everything will be handmade especially for you."
