Korean drama My ID Is Gangnam Beauty broke the taboo of plastic surgery when it aired on the small screen in 2018. The drama achieved what others before it could not: An engaging storyline with well-weaved insights on sexism and the social pressure behind the Korean standard of beauty.
Here are all the updates on the My ID Is Gangnam Beauty cast:
Im Soo Hyang
Im Soo Hyang catapulted into Hallyu fame after playing the drama's insecure protagonist Kang Mi Rae. Her performance as a college student who went under the knife thanks to social (and family) pressure copped her a Top Excellence Award at the 26th Korea Culture and Entertainment Awards.
The talented actress recently attracted media attention for her acting chops in mystery drama Graceful Family. In it, she plays a brainy heiress out to discover the "real" truth behind her mother's death.
In an interview following the success of the drama, Soo Hyang revealed that she flew to Thailand for a photoshoot right after finishing Graceful Family and spent time with her dogs. She confessed that she did nothing but watch American TV shows for a day and got sick right after. The experience made her realize that being busy with work keeps her in her best state.
In 2020, she starred in the drama When I Was the Most Beautiful (also known as When I Was Prettiest), which tells the story of two brothers, Seo Hwan (Ji Soo) and Seo Jin (Ha Seok Jin), who fall in love with the same woman: Oh Ye Ji (Im Soo Hyang)!
Cha Eun Woo
Armed with looks that make hearts flutter, the charming Cha Eun Woo from K-pop boy group ASTRO aced his first lead role in Gangnam Beauty as smart and wealthy campus heartthrob Do Kyung Seok. Taking on the role of a character whose cold, aloof demeanor served as a front for a caring guy who looks beyond physical beauty bagged Eun Woo a string of Best New Actor awards at the 11th Korea Drama Awards, the 3rd Asia Artist Awards, and the Yahoo Asia Buzz Awards in 2018.
Right after completing the drama, Eun Woo hit the studio and reunited with the members of ASTRO to record tracks for their first full-length album, All Light. Promotional tours and recording for the group's Japanese debut EP, Venus, kept him busy alongside product endorsement activities during the first half of 2019.
He made his K-drama comeback in July 2019 as Yi Rim, a prince with a penchant for writing romance novels, in the historical drama Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung. He headlined the drama alongside veteran actress Shin Se Kyung, who played a free-spirited bookworm. Se Kyung's character, Goo Hae Ryung, isn't a fan of the romance novel genre that Eun Woo's character is very passionate about. Watch the drama to marvel at how Eun Woo effortlessly pulls off traditional Korean wear (there isn't an outfit he doesn't look good in!).
In October 2019, Eun Woo made time to visit fans in Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and, yes, Manila. Dubbed as Just One 10 Minute after the Naver V Live broadcasts he regularly makes to reach out to fans, his agency explained that his fan meeting name also links to the fact that it takes only 10 minutes for anyone to fall for Eun Woo—so true!
The cutie treated Manila fans to performances of hits from his drama OSTs and even serenaded them with Ben & Ben's OPM hit "Kathang Isip" when he visited the country on October 26.
In December 2020, he starred in the webtoon-based drama True Beauty, where he played Lee Suho: "He seems so perfect on the outside—he's smart, rich, and handsome—but he's been secretly grieving over the loss of his friend to suicide." His leading lady, Moon Ga Young, played a girl name Im Ju Kyung who has been bullied all her life and who uses makeup to hide her insecurities.
Jo Woo Ri
If you were super hooked on K-drama Descendants Of The Sun, you'll remember Woo Ri as the sweet pregnant wife of Onew from K-pop group SHINee. In Gangnam Beauty, she plays popular girl Hyun Soo A, a natural beauty whose innocent looks hide her deceitful side.
In 2019, she starred in the web drama It's Okay, You Won't Die, where she played Oh Min Joo, an employee who dreams of a better life beyond the confines of the corporate world.
Kwak Dong Yeon
If you fell for second-lead teaching assistant Yeon Woo Young and his unrequited love for Mi Rae, you can catch more of him in the 2018 romance drama My Strange Hero where he played protagonist Oh Se Ho.
In 2019, he starred in the comedy-drama Never Twice, where he played hotel heir Na Hae Jun who rivals the inn that the drama centers on. Kwak Dong Yeon also made a special cameo appearance in the hit 2020 drama It's Okay To Not Be Okay.
This year, he is part of the cast of the Song Joong Ki drama Vincenzo, where "during a visit to his motherland, a Korean-Italian mafia lawyer gives an unrivaled conglomerate a taste of its own medicine with a side of justice." (Via Netflix)
