We love a good slice-of-life or melo K-drama just as much as anyone, but sometimes, we just find ourselves looking for something more—something out of this world! From ghosts and zombies to nine-tailed foxes and grim reapers, South Korea has featured all sorts of supernatural and mythical creatures in its dramas.

We’ve selected some of our recent faves below that you can watch on Netflix, iQIYI, and Viu, and they're all guaranteed to feed your escapist fantasies.

1. The School Nurse Files (2020)

Who’s in it: Jung Yu Mi, Nam Joo Hyuk

Where to watch it: Netflix

This is one of the weirdest K-dramas we’ve ever watched—in a good way! Our heroine, Ahn Eun Young (Yu Mi), is a school nurse with the ability to see jellies. These jellies are a manifestation of people’s desires, and some of them can be harmful and turn into monsters. Eun Young fights these types of jellies with her weapons of choice: a BB gun and a toy sword. Hong In Pyo (Joo Hyuk) is a school teacher surrounded by a mysterious force field that repels jellies. Eun Young initially befriends him because of his power, but they soon join forces to help students affected by jellies in school.

Along with Chief Gwi (Won Young), she visits their dreams to fix the root of their problems. Enter Han Kang Bae (Sung Jae), a young man who can make people spill their problems just by touching them. He becomes a part-time employee at the bar. While the drama might feel episodic at first, you’ll soon realize there’s a bigger plot unfolding about Weol Ju’s past, and it will have you holding on to the edge of your seat until the last ep.

There is nothing more fulfilling than watching Choi Jin Hyuk dance to 2PM’s “Heartbeat” as a zombie. That’s just one of many highlights you’ll get when you watch Zombie Detective, a drama that’s equal parts comedy and mystery. Jin Hyuk’s character wakes up as a zombie with no memories of his previous life, and as he learns how to live as a human again, he takes over the life of private detective Kim Moo Young and begins solving cases. Ju Hyun plays Gong Sun Ji, an investigative journalist who becomes Moo Young’s assistant and partner-in-crime.

4. Sweet Home (2020)

Who’s in it: Song Kang, Lee Jin Wook, Lee Si Young

Where to watch it: Netflix

This highly watched Netflix drama revolves around Cha Hyun Soo (Song Kang), a high school student who moves to a run-down apartment complex called Green Home after his family dies. While Hyun Soo gets to know Green Home’s quirky residents, the world turns upside-down as monsters start taking over humans and an apocalypse ensues. The building residents must band together—and understand how the monsters work—if they want to survive. The special effects are topnotch, but what’s really riveting is the story itself. By the end of the series, you’ll find yourself asking, “Who are the world’s real monsters?”

Where to watch it: iQiyi

This cute rom-com is based on a webtoon of the same name. In it, college student Lee Dam (Hye Ri) is forced to live with gumiho (nine-tailed fox) Shin Woo Yeo after she accidentally swallows his fox bead. Woo Yeo aspires to be human, and he needs his fox bead to achieve his wish. If he can’t find a way to get his fox bead from Dam within a year, Dam will die and he loses his bead, along with his chance of becoming human. If this drama sounds familiar to you, it might be because there were early reports of two of our fave Start-Up actors joining the cast: Kang Ha Na and Kim Do Wan play supporting characters here, and they have their own love line. We can’t wait to see how the romance develops!
