For K-drama fans, it's a dream come true to have their ships turn into reality. And this actually happened to some onscreen loveteams! Below is a list of K-drama couples who became an item in real life:
1. Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo
The love story between Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo (known as the SongSong couple), elevated fan feels to a whole new level. Way before the couple began filming the iconic K-drama Descendants of the Sun (DOTS) in 2015, Joong Ki was already dropping hints of being a fan of Hye Kyo's talent and beauty. He met her on the set of That Winter, the Wind Blows in 2012 when he made a surprise visit to see his close friend Jo In Sung, who starred alongside her. In one of her magazine interviews, Hye Kyo recalled their first meeting and talked about how Joong Ki greeted her as his sunbae (senior). She also mentioned occasionally bumping into him by coincidence at cafés right after.
Joong Ki and Hye Kyo's OTL onscreen chemistry propelled the global popularity of DOTS and fueled well-wishes from supporters who kept their fingers crossed for the possibility of a real-life pairing. Shippers got their wish when news of the couple's relationship and engagement broke in July 2017. The revelation was proof that K-drama dreams can come true. Joong Ki and Hye Kyo tied the knot on October 31, 2017. Their wedding was a lavish, star-studded event that earned worldwide attention.
Just when the world was waiting for news of a SongSong baby, fan hearts broke when Joong Ki filed for divorce in June 2017. Hye Kyo's agency responded to news of the divorce right after by citing differences in personality as the main reason. By July 22, the Seoul Family Court approved the couple's divorce. On that same day, fans were shocked to discover that Hye Kyo deleted her photos with Song Joong Ki (including their wedding photo!) from her official IG account. Though fans can only speculate on what went wrong, it is undeniable that both were in love when they were still together.
2. Ahn Jae Hyun and Ku Hye Sun
Ku Hye Sun of Boys Over Flowers fame met Ahn Jae Hyun in 2015 while filming the K-drama, Blood. The medical-fantasy drama, which marked Jae Hyun's first lead role, won viewers over with the couple's onscreen chemistry (the two stars played doctors drawn to each other by fate).
The couple got married in 2016, after a year of dating. Instead of spending on a grand wedding, Hye Sun and Jae Hyun shocked the world with their philanthropy by donating a significant amount to the pediatric ward of Severance Hospital in Seoul.
In an interview with Star Today, Hye Sun revealed how she avoided Jae Hyun at first and tried really hard to block her feelings for him. She talked about how her efforts failed and how he eventually won her over with his innocence and non-jaded personality.
In August 2019, another breakup rocked the K-drama scene. HB Entertainment, the agency of Hye Sun and Jae Hyun, released a statement announcing that the couple agreed to get a divorce. Unfortunately, the split was not amicable, and there was a lot of drama from both sides.
3. Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young
Though the characters that Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young played in the 2004 drama Save The Last Dance for Me didn't end up together, the couple started dating a few years after the drama aired and went public with their relationship in 2007.
Ji Sung and Bo Young cemented a six-year relationship with marriage in 2013. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Ji Yoo, on June 12, 2015, and a son, Bo Ah, on February 4, 2019. In a TV show, the actor named his children as "a gift from God" and shared that he quit drinking because of them: "At some point, I realized that my drinking wasn’t any help to myself or my family. I restrain myself. It’s impossible to raise kids while doing everything like going out for work dinners."
4. Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young
Fans were not surprised when Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young admitted that they were in a relationship after the action K-drama City Hunter aired in 2011. Press statements from their agencies both echoed how both actors developed feelings for each other during the series' filming.
The couple dated for about five months before calling it quits. Their agencies announced that their busy schedules and the pressure brought about by paparazzi following them wherever they go were the main reasons for the split.
5. Nam Joo Hyuk and Lee Sung Kyung
Models turned actors Nam Joo Hyuk and Lee Sung Kyung have been good friends since their modeling days. The YG Entertainment actors were first cast as supporting actors in the 2016 drama Cheese In The Trap. In the same year, Joo Hyuk and Sung Kyung bagged their first lead roles and starred as a couple in the breakthrough university drama Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. The pair continued dating even after the show ended. Fan sightings of the lovely couple even include a concert date at Coldplay's 2017 show in Korea! Even if Joo Hyuk and Sung Kyung tried to keep their relationship low-key (by wearing face masks, sporting baggy clothes, and meeting in secret), paparazzi photos eventually surfaced forcing their label to acknowledge their relationship.
A lot of fans cheered for Korea's best #swag couple and were super sad to hear about their breakup. Joo Hyuk and Sung Kyung sustained a very short relationship, which lasted for four months.
6. Kim Bum and Moon Geun Young
It was in October 2013 when Kim Bum and Moon Geun Young was confirmed to be dating by their respective agencies. According to Geun Young's label, the pair started to realize their feelings for each other while they were filming the K-drama Goddess of Fire. It was also reported that they once traveled to Europe and did some ~serious~ sightseeing. When they came back to South Korea, they were spotted in matching OOTDs while holding hands! Sweet. <3
Sadly, Kim Bum and Geun Young broke up six months after and was said to have ended their relationship on good terms.
7. Ki Tae Young and Eugene
Actor Ki Tae Young and former S.E.S idol-turned actress Eugene began dating after working together in manga-based drama Creating Destiny. The couple took things further and created their own destiny by tying the knot in 2011.
Eugene gave birth to their first daughter, Ro Hee in April 2015. The family of three was a viewer-favorite during their two-year stint in the family variety show The Return of Superman. Eugene and Tae Young welcomed their second child, Ro Run, in August 2018. In 2020, the couple celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary and posted a photo of them on Instagram with the caption: “The ninth anniversary. Time flies! For the first time in a while, we spent time with just the two of us without the little ones. It’s already been nine years since we started our lives as a ‘married couple.’ I can’t believe it. My husband, who always does his best for his family, I’m always grateful, and I love you.”

8. Lee Chun Hee and Jun Hye Jin
After appearing in the 2009 drama Smile, You, Lee Chun Hee and Jun Hye Jin began their romantic relationship, notwithstanding their 9-year-old age difference. They tied the knot in 2011 and welcomed their first daughter in the same year.
What's super cute about this couple is that they even appeared in a K-drama together after their marriage! Chun Hee described how it's like working with his wife in a magazine interview: “She looks the happiest when she’s working. It may be a given since she’s working again after resting for about seven years. I become even happier when I see her enjoying the work she’s doing.” Awww!
9. Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin
We love them a *lot* as the #RiriCouple in the top-rating Netflix drama Crash Landing On You and we love it even more when they became #BinJin IRL! Earlier this year, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin were confirmed to be dating ~for real~ by their individual agencies. According to Dispatch, they developed their feelings for each other after CLOY aired and went on golf dates. Before the said announcement, the two were already rumored to be in a relationship many, many times.
CLOY is not the first project that they both worked on together as they also led the blockbuster film The Negotiation in 2018. When they finished filming the movie, Binnie revealed that he wanted to work with Ye Jin once again "in the same space, making eye contact, and breathing the same air." And it came true! Thanks to CLOY, we all started 2021 with good news. We wish all the best for you, BinJin!
